Here is how to solve the problem of unified heavyweight champ. If one of the abc champs decided to fight the others and not pay the belt fee even though he won, he wouldn't get that belt, but the fans would acknowledge him as the unified champ. This way the other belts would systematically lose credibility. 1. The fighters need to agree to doing this 2. WE the fans need to make a stand(we pay the real fees anyway PPV) ONE WORLD-ONE BELT-ONE CHAMP!
It's not as if it doesn't happen on a small scale already. Most "recognized" champions don't own all 4 belts in any weight division. The major difference with my proposal is that a heavyweight champ would make it known to the public that this is what he is doing. I think in general the fans would support him (at least the ones who enjoy having one heavyweight champion and one championship belt)
But they are not HW, for example Hopkins is man at LHW but he may fight other pvp boxers from different weight classes who do not have the belts at LHW (Wright, Calzaghe) and still be man at LHW. At HW this is impossible, if for example Wlad will be champion and he fight Hopkins and lose somehow then I doubt you will still call Hopkins HW champion if he fight Jones or Calzaghe at catchweight of 190lb. Also they keeps Ring or linel belt instead the ABCD belt. So untill formal substitution of ABCD belts exists then its not gonna work. Wlad is #1 now but I guess there is no consesnsus who is #2 or #3 right now without considering the belts, so I guess there will not be recognized lineal or ring champion when fighters drop their titles.
For arguments sake let's say Vlad executes my process and becomes THE heavy champ. Then Hopkins beats him. Yes, Hopkins would be THE heavyweight champ. If he fought someone else outside of the heavyweight limit then the heavyweight belt wouldn't be on the line. It's that simple; when Taylor beat Spinks, Taylor didn't become the jr middle champ did he? And if Hopkins would vacate the heavyweight belt then the #1 and #2 ranked fighters would fight for it. It's that simple. It can work, but the fighters must be willing to make it work. I know that particular sanctioning body wouldn't complain.
But who will fight for the vacated belts when Hopkins leave? The guys who vacated their belts or the guys who keep them real? Sooner or later its going to be bigg mess when the "champion" is not related to any one ABCD belt. The only way to keep this real is to create ring/leneal champion who is not related to ABCD belt and he is enough marketable so HBO/Showtime pay for his fights.
The #1 and #2 ranked fighters in the division. There would be a ranking system so who would fight for the belt would not be a big issue.
Dominating them. Byrd was the recognized #1 Heavy. Forget the Heavies Wlad is pretty much the only title holder in boxing right now that has consistently fought the best available and dominated everyone lately. This technicality bull**** is getting tiresome, Wlad is the best heavy with the best resume and a belt......he is the Champ. :deal
Then he can just fight the other belt holders w/out paying the fees, discredit the other belts, and establish that he is the ONLY champ....but he hasn't.
