Byrd wasn't ever recognized #1 heavyweight, at a time Vitaly, Ruiz and even Brewster were higher. Wlad indeed have the best resume and skills from HW right now. I do not agree however he is the champion, but he is #1 contender. He will not be champion untill he beat another recognized belt holder or someone who doesn't have a belt but is #2 or #3 HW.
Here is a good example of its affect: When Judah lost to Baldomir he kept some of his belts, but the public recognized Baldomir as THE champ at 147. So after Floyd beat Judah he still had to beat Baldomir to be recognized as THE champ at 147 regardless of the abc trinkets. The abc belts are nothing without the credibility of the fighters and the acknowledgment of the fans.
I agree 100%. I've been saying this for the longest. If a champ is serious about unifying titles, he will fight other champs, regardless he keeps his other belts. It's such an outdated and stupid idea that just b/c someone isn't holding X amount of belts that he can't be considered the best or unofficial champion. If Wlad got stripped of his IBF and then fought & beat Maskaev or Chagaev, I dare someone to tell me that he's not the undisputed HW champ. And if he were to get stripped of that belt and then he went on to beat another HW champ, we'd have a unified champ in SPIRIT, which is better than being a champ in name only. And at this point of his career, Wlad can dump the IBF and just go after other champs b/c he's already proven that he's the best by DEMOLISHING his opponents.
The other ABC organizations wouldn't have to disappear. They could still exist as stepping stones to the REAL champ. Whoever heard of having 17 champs in one division (it's insanely ******ed). I get pissed off when there are 2 national champs in NCAA college football due to the BS of the BCS. Now imagine my disgust at the ABC organizations in my favorite sport when there are 17 possible "CHAMPIONS" in any one division. I say boycott the belts; unless you're fighting for the ONE TRUE CHAMPIONSHIP BELT then it's only a certificate of appreciation.
I dont think the Heavyweight divsions biggest problem is the all the belts floating around, if that was the case all the other divsions would be struggling as well, which there not. The Heavyweight divsion has many problems, lack of exciting fights, limmited talent as whole, none of them brings a good personality to the table, making it less likely the average fan will watch the fight because theres no hype behind it, also tons of postponements from the title holders which leaves fans of the Heavyweight division does have, pissed off and disappointed.
True, but one of its biggest problems is that there is no one consensus champion and there hasn't been for some time now. And even if the belts are unified sometime in the next 10 years they probably won't stay that way for more than 2. Thus, something must be done about these things in the sport as a whole. In my humble opinion, "American boxing fanbase has been on the decline ever since the belt split and will never realize its former glory until these ABC organizations are ripped up."
I know it's not easy and I know they are ducking Wlad (except for Iggy), but Wlad should be much more vocal in his challenges. He is not THE champ and he should verbally assault the other belt holders (keeping all comments professional of course ) until "their" respective organizations force them into a unification. He should go to the 2008 Superbowl, run onto the field during the halftime show, snatch the mic from whoever is performing and shout: "The champ is here! The champ is here! Who wanna test this? I can whoop any man in the house, er.. um ... I mean stadium! Holla if ya hear me!" Then his fans in the crowd can chant: "Haaay HO, Wlad by Kaaay O!":good
I think the real fans, such as myself, know Wlads the real champ in the Heavyweight divsion. I would like to see all the belts come together as well, but I also would love to see Tyson champ again, it just isnt going to happen. Even if Wlad beats Iggy, I really cant see how holding a WBO belt for 6 months and having to drop it because you wont fight the mandatory, is going to help the divsion in any way, just my opinion. I just think the excitement and fun of the divsion left in the 90s, I dont really see it getting any better anytime soon.
I know the situation is pitiful, but the real fans, such as yourself, should want to see 1 champion in each division, period. It shouldn't matter if the talent pool is weak or fantastic, a sport is not supposed to have multiple champions at one time. I don't know about you, but that "everybody's a winner" crap is supposed to die after elementary school.
I agree that there should be 1 title holder/champ, I just think its damn near impossible to bring 4 titles together anymore. I came to terms it's just not going to happen, all I ask for is more talent and better matchups so I could get excited again about the Heavyweight divsion.
