the other belt holders were seen as paper champs.

 

Lennox Lewis was dismissed as a "glass chinned robot", Riddick Bowe was a lazy gutless waste of talent, Holyfield was a misplaced cruiserweight and Tyson was ( take your pick ) in jail, the baddest man on the planet, bipolar being denied his medication. Today, though, they all look pretty good compared to any other heavyweight era. I suppose nostalgia obscures the shortcomings of the day. They didn't really fight each other until it was too late but "the glass chinned robot" proved a lot of people wrong.

 

from an american perspective it might seem that way, but equally someone like marquez , if he were european would never ever go to indonesia to fight for $32 but would stay at home and fight for $500k a fight.

i mean ottke used to earn $8 million a year just in purses fighting in germany.

in america he would not even have been put on tv, let alone ppv.

 

That seems to be the promoters killing the sport more than the boxers are killing the sport. I think PPV has a lot to do with boxers not being household names today. What other sport makes its fans jump through hoops to watch a contest?
