Wow I had no idea that Max hid two Jewish kids in his house while Nazi gangs were outside looking for all the jews. That is incredible.

One of the jewish kids said in an interview not very long ago: "Max did for us, what God didn't do. How else can you explain it?"

Incredible. Anyone else know of any other amazing things that Max did? I always knew he was no real Nazi or anything, but I never knew he was this heroic.

Many of Schmelings good deeds are shrouded in mystery because he did not seek recognition for them. One of his jewish friends later claimed that he helped over 100 people in one way or another.

It is fairly reliably reported that he lifted sombody out of the back of a van taking them to one of the concentration camps and tampered with files to get people more lenient treatment.

    Thats a true man.

Wow janitor!! That would be amazing! Thats like straight out of a movie. Aren't they making a movie on Schmeling? I think its a German movie, but it should be great.

Anybody got any good books to recommend?

Yes, R. I read an autobiography by Schmeling, that was enlightening. I took it out of a library 2-3 years ago. It was published in Germany.Check it out...

Unfairly condemned for being a bad guy..he was the symbol of Nazism in the second Louis fight as well as in the Baer fight. He was grossly misunderstood...and not until fairly recently, in my opinion, given the credit he deserved for his brilliant upset of Louis. Like I've said...he and perhaps Carlos Monzon are the two most mysterious boxers of history.

I think they were sons of his friend and he got them out the country. Schmellings manager was also Jewish if I remember correctly. Hitler wanted Schmelling to join the Nazi party and stop socialising with Jews but Max refused, because of this Max was placed on the front line. A great man, his story is an interesting 1 and it could be the best boxing movie ever made based on its an actual story, ie it has 1.

As has been mentioned a German version is to be released, Hollywood tend to mess up biopics by dumbing them down

Unfortunate the task was overtaken by the garbage director Uwe Boll, with the cast being made up of current and ex-German boxers.

Right, Schmeling is played by Henry Maske, and as far as I know Arthur Abraham plays his last opponent Riedel Vogt.

Schmeling also would not fire his Jewish manager, despite requests from the Reich. For all his non-compliance, they made Max a paratrooper in Crete, a thoroughly undesireable assignment, and one which hospitalized him for months.
