The IBF middleweight title has been on a bum carousel since 2009

if Barker knew how to feint once in a while and throw lead straight rights he could've taken out old Sergio. he fought like a bum and was the chicken although Sergio actually looked like one.

 

I take the point, but the fact is GGG is still being built. For most of the guys on the IBF carousel Adama would be considered a tough but winnable fight, for GGG it is a letdown, but given he's not really fought anyone that much better except perhaps Macklin it perhaps shouldn't be seen as such. The hype train may or may not be running in front of his abilities but it's certainly ahead of his actual resume.

Part of the issue, in fact, with getting decent opponents in the ring with GGG is simply that the Geale, Barker, Sturm, Lee level opponents have lucrative, but more importantly winnable, title fights with each other on the carousel. Macklin, who was reasonably considered of a level with these guys was walked through, and his stock has taken a considerable hit as a result. Golovkin was kept away from Sturm for a long time under Universum and has only recently become a big enough draw to even be considered worth the risk.

FWIW Barker was a better known name than GGG when he fought Martinez in 2011, Macklin was considered top 4 or 5 in 2011, Sturm #2 (and GGG wanted to be fighting these guys back then, specially Sturm).

In essence, GGG will only become a worthwhile fight for the IBF level scrum (and let's not call them 'bums' or anything remotely similar cos these are the top 10 of the 160 division) if he's able to become lineal champ. Until then, despite all the enthusiasm and promotion within the boxing community he remains simply another beltholder who's only recently become known to the more casual fans who bring in most of the revenue.

Who gives a fúck what Sturm is doing. The highlight of his career is losing to DLH. Says it all. He'll keep the belt hostage in Germany until he retires, he daren't step foot anywhere else for fear of bumping into the one they call Triple G.

 

Abraham wasn't special either

 

This is a guy who preyed on a severely injured man in Darren Barker, instead of fighting the one they call Golovkin, despite being offered the fight several times. Sturm has no shame.

IBO belt already more relevant than IBF at 160. Alphabet title only as relevant as the guy who holds it. To get the IBO belt, you have to beat GGG. To get the IBF belt, you have to get Sturm to actually agree to get in the ring.

They should just rename the IBF belt to "European champ"
