Hit and not get hit. Thats the generally accepted idea. Originally I think boxing was about winning a fight. Proving yourself to have a greater intangibles that your opponent. Beating an opponent. Fights would continue till someone lost. I think over time, as the sport has evolved, the phrase hit and don't get hit is more appropriate. But its got to the point where its more about winning than actual fighting. I appreciate skills. Slipping punches, countering shots, footwork etc. But at the end of the day, they shouldn't considered in scoring. Defense is to stop you getting hit, it doesnt damage your opponent, sure it may make them tired, frustrated ect. this will make them easier to beat, but if you don't beat on them.......why should you be rewarded for it. I think it should be about who dishes out the most punishment. That simple. (by the way this post is not aimed at any boxers)
