He's one of maybe three people who is on Robinson's level.

He has a legit case for top 5.

I haven't done a p4p list in over a decade but i have always rated SRR, Armstrong, Langford, Duran, Pep and Charles as my top 6 in no particular order.

As a light - heavyweight, it is highly unlikely anyone will ever match his resume. #1 light heavyweight of all time. Only Moore and Spinks have resumes close to his at 175 and he beat Moore 3-0.

Think Robinson was more dominant but Charles had the tougher competition. Came up and faced some of the best LHWs to ever live then best the number 2 HW ever. Argument can b made the other way but I like Charles best wins over Robinson’s.

Don’t give me that Ezzard Charles is as good as Ray Robinson and you’d find very few guys who know anything to say they’re not in the same tier.

    Henry Armstrong
    Ray Robinson
    Roberto Duran
    Ezzard Charles
are the “modern” p4pers you think? Without getting into the at times sketchy truly old timer boxing.

Those people who were lucky enough to see that fight were witnessing possibly the 2 greatest LHWs in history battle it out & didn't even know it.

My top 6 would look something like,
    1. Robinson
    2. Greb
    3. Langford
    4. Charles
    5. Armstrong
    6. Walker

I could see Charles being rated anywhere in the 3-5 range, but I think the top 2 spots are reserved for Robinson & Greb.

The Cincinnati Cobra was truly great! He fought everyone and aside with being blessed with amazing athleticism, he made himself a true all around great through hard work and dedication.

forgot about Greb. So i would have SRR, Greb, Langford, Armstrong, Charles, Duran, Pep. I need to rewatch Walker to get a better appreciation. Your list is very good.

A real shame indeed. Would love to have seen footage of Charles against Charley Burley as well.

I’d prefer Archie Moore I think Burley was just too small for Ezz.

Charles may have had a size advantage over Burley when he beat him but Burley still went on to beat Archie Moore in one sided fashion according to Moore himself. Still an excellent win from Charles considering how good Burley was even if he was a smaller fighter in comparison.

That said I also would prefer to see footage of Charles vs Moore. The third fight was said to be a truly epic battle with a crazy ending that ended with Charles on the verge of getting stopped only to KO Moore with a perfect punch. That is a fight that I wish would have been available on film.
