I am American But through DNA evidence, I discovered I am more than 60 % British Isles - Scotland and England. My paternal 7th great grandfather is buried under the floor of the Tewkesbury Abbey in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England. I found his will online - he died in 1681. He was a "Tallow Chandler" whatever the hell that was. He was also twice the Bailiff (Mayor) of Tewkesbury. Genealogy is cool.
Tewkesbury Abbey is a wonderful building, and probably recognised as one of, if not the best example of Norman style architecture in Britain. The other half and myself visited the place last year and found it stunning, even though either of us have religion. I believe a tallow chandler is one who makes/and/ or sells candles and other various oils. The introduction of electricity would have eventually put the later traders out of business.
I live not that far from Tewkesbury and I doubt having visited the town a few times that electricity was being used .The locals probably view it as the work of the devil .Trev berbick would have fitted in a treat with the good folk of Tewkesbury as they are as crazy as he was.
