Yes you are correct,Tyson's explosiveness would have to be harvested with care.
You could say that tugging and mauling with larger guys over 20/25rds would have knackered Tyson to the point of exhaustion.

It might even have rendered him vulnerable to a stoppage himself.

I was just thinking out loud, presenting alternative endings to myself really. That's how I arrive at my somewhat muddled conclusions.

Do you think Jack Finnegan, or Jack Munroe would be competitive with David Haye?
There are quite a few on here, who will tell you that Jeffries would not be.

There's no clear film of Jim Jeffries fighting in his prime.
And there's no clear film of the men he beat around that time.

It would be ridiculous to make a prediction on a fight with him in it against any good fighter of any era. We just dont know enough to start talking about how we think he'd do head-to-head.

It's like,
"Haye v. Klitschko, who wins ?"
"Haven't seen Haye"
"Yeah, but he beat Valuev."
"Haven't seen Valuev"
"Ok, he beat Mormeck"
"Haven't seen Mormeck"
"Ok, he beat Barrett."
"Haven't seen Barrett"

No one's going to say much about a fighter they haven't seen and aren't even familiar with his opponents.

We have been over this before.

1 ) Ruhlin threw in his own sponge. His corner did not.

2 ) We have been over Munroe's weight. It was 210 pounds for the fight according to San Fran Chronicle who gave detailed press to the lead up. Box rec is wrong. So your claim that Jeffries only fought one fighter over 200 is false. Its at least three Ruhlin, Munore, and Johnson. Possibly more as Long, Kennedy, and Van Buskirk were big men.

3 ) Jackson was older, but he was in shape and according to the press and his backers, in good form. stamina had nothing do do with this fight. Jackson had a good first round It was essentially over in 1 and a half rounds as soon As Jeffries landed his hook.

Those are the facts:good

Jones, a blown up 160 pound middle who loaded his body with substances to the point where he tested 5x above the normal testosterone limit, would not be the biggest puncher Jeffries faced.

For sure, Fitzsimmons, and Sharkey hit harder. I would say Johnson, Goddard, and Jackson did too. Roy Jones had a glass jaw. No way he last long at heavyweight.

If you read the report, Corbett did not out box Jeffries. The first fight was even or slightly in Jeffries favor prior to the KO. Read the news reports.

In the re-match, Jeffries was on top of his game. The ref Said, if the two were the same size, Jeffries still would have won.

Munroe definitely would start favourite against Haye, in my book. I hope Haye turns out to be the goods, but he is far too untested. Munroe was a top contender and capable of knocking him out. By the way, Munroe has already fought D Hayes and he lost the fight, because he failed to stop Hayes within 4 rounds. I wonder if he would make the same rules against David Haye. Possibly a great grandson?

As for the Finnster, well he would start in that ever famous underdog position, but the Finnster could very easily pull it out. From his known record, a 20 round no Decision would not be out of the question. I dont really think that Haye had the proven power of a Gus Ruhlin or Jimmy Jeffries, Do you?

The comparison was not comparing Jeffries power to Tysons. It was pointing out, that just because a fighter doesnt KO a lesser fighter, whether smaller, previously knocked out or whatever does not mean that a fighter doesnt have power. For example, Tillis was stopped by Thomas, page, williams and witherspoon. Yet he went the distance with Tyson and Shavers! That does not mean that Tyson and Shavers have no power just because they didnt stop a fighter who was stopped often and regularly by others. Sometimes things just dont fall into place in a fight.

It all started innocently enough, an exhibition contest between the reigning Heavyweight Champion of the World and former Heavyweight Champion, Robert Fitzsimmons who were touring together in the Mid West . As part of the show, Jeffries issued the standard challenge to the crowd, offering $500 to any man who could stay four rounds with him. An employee of the local Anaconda mine named Jack Munroe came forward. Although out weighed by some forty pounds Munroe prove quick and evasive, to the degree that he clearly out pointed the Champion in the first two rounds. An angry Jeffries came out for round three and managed to knock Munroe down three times, but come the end of the appointed four rounds Jack Munroe was still standing and had won the challenge and $500 of the Champion's money. But then, the trouble began in earnest, local referee Duncan McDonald allowed that not only was Jack Munroe entitled to the $500, but that he had in fact won the fight! Jeffries was incensed and what folllowed was two years of press build-up, two cancelled fight dates, a knockout of Peter Maher and a fight to draw with Jack Sharkey featuring the miner Munroe and finally...
James J. Jeffries
vs.
Jack Munroe
World's Heavyweight Championship

Billy Madden, Ruhlin's manager threw in the sponge between the 5th and 6th rds .

I was referring to the men Jeffries faced in his proper career , ie before Johnson who beat him like he was his Daddy. In that I was correct,Ruhlin was the ONLY 200 pounder Jeffries fought.Ruhlin weighed 200lbs for Jeffries Jeffries fought NO ONE OVER THAT WEIGHT.

Jackson was alcoholic and tubercular all but 37 years old ,and had not fought in 3 years ,where is the basis for his "good form"?

Munroe is describe as being 40lbs LIGHTER than Jeffries for their exhibition bout ,do you think he added 40 lbs between their fights?

Boxrec gives Munroe's weight for the Maher fight as 190lbs is the wrong too?

The Maher fight was only 8 months earlier.

CORRECTION TO THE ABOVE

Done some more digging,on Munroe's weight for the Jeffries fight, found this.

Munroe weighs 210, and he is a splendid
specimen of physical vigor, having not
one ounce of superfluous flesh. His legs
and thighs are as large as those of Jeffries,
but in chest measurement and arm he is
smaller than the champion.
Jeffries seconds were Billy Delaney, Jack
Jeffries, Joe Kennedy and Jimmy Britt.
Behind Munroe were Kid McCoy, Tim
McGrath, Twin Sullivan, Frank McDonald
and Harry Foley.

This was taken from a blow by blow account of the fight ,as reported in the New York Sun.
Aug 27th 1904. The weight given for Munroe is clearly 210lbs ,I accept this and say I was
WRONG in my contention that Munroe scaled 186lbs for the fight

It is strange that Munroe was reported to be in excellent condition ,yet only 8 months previously he ,according to Box rec weighed 190lbs for hs fight with Maher .
Perhaps both weights given by Box rec are incorrect?.

Nevertheless I beleive my original weight was incorrect and MENDOZA'S was CORRECT. :good

I thought about erasing my earlier error but thought it would seem like I was trying to deny making it, so I just posted a correction below it.
SO TO ENCAPSULE MY CORRECTION JEFFRIES FOUGHT ONE FIGHTER OVER 200LBS, BEFORE HIS COMEBACK AGAINST JOHNSON.

And I pointed out that the difference between the men Tyson failed to stop and those that went 20 and 25 rds with Jeffries was ,in some cases 9 inches in height and 60lbs + in weight, also that the men Tyson fought all fought defensively,ie to survive.
Therefore, using Tyson as an analogy does not work.

I've read in secondary sources that Ruhlin threw in the sponge in his challenge of Jeffries when his corner wouldn't. However, perusing Pollack's 'In the Ring with James J. Jeffries', I didn't note any indication that Ruhlin threw in the sponge, and some statements to the contrary. Madden himself said he stopped the fight because he didn't wish to see Ruhlin take another beating comparable to the horrific one Gus had received from Fitzsimmons.

Thank you you are correct, but Mendoza ,who quotes this book at every opportunity will not accept it.
Not that it really matters ,my point to Boilermaker was that he asserted Ruhlin was one of the 5 opponents kod inside 4 rds by Jeffries ,when he patently was not ,his corner retired him between the 5th and 6th rds.
In fact NONE of the men Boilermaker named were kod unconscious Goddard , Munroe,Everett, Jackson ,were all tkod, and Ruhlin, retired by his corner.
Goddard had lost his last 2 fights one to Van Buskirk ,the other, a clean ko to Sharkey.
He had been stopped twice before, so it was not a unique occurrence..

Haye would be heavier than anyone Jeffries fought at 217 lbs and at 6' 3' as tall as any.I think he would ko Munroe, he stunned a 316lbs Valuev in the last round of their fight, he has the power to stop Munroe imo.

Mcvey is learning. Munroe was 210. Papers say Kennedy was 200 or more when Jeffreis Ko'd him. And the Finster who had no buisness being in the ring has a deeper record that Box Rec lists.

A great fighter is a great fighter. There is a saying the "cream rises to the top" well its hard to say how high Jeffries would have rose but there were punchers in his day and he took a solid wallop. I really do not see any big men that would have been more of a challenge because of size alone. from what I hear Jeffries had speed and movement and I would have to say he would also have been a stern challenge to Tyson.
