The irony is that the Americans love this fight!

For years, most Brits championed the Calzaghe cause against the American media/fans who thought he was a eurobum. Joe, to the Yanks was given all sorts of nicknames: Joke Calzaghe, "Stay at home" Joe etc etc while most people in the UK and Europe knew he was the real deal and appreciated his talents as such. Beating Lacy was a decent start to getting the respect across the pond. Walloping Kessler was given very good credability by proper boxing fans the world over. But the shift since he beat Hopkins in America is considerable.

    And now Roy Jones.

Take a look at the Brit forum and people are lambasting Calzaghe for taking this fight. Even Calzombies are embarrased by him signing a deal with Jones. Furthermore, Joe has gone out of his way to make this fight happen by splitting with his long time promoter Frank Warren.

But I have just listened to respected columnist Dan Rafael (http://sports.espn.go.com/broadband/video/videopage?videoId=3479207&categoryId=2491554&n8pe6c=2), read some other thoughts from Americans on this fight:
Most are even picking Jones to do the business.

Joe is also keeping his WBA & WBO SMW trinkets and effectively holding that division hostage but maintains that this fight (at LHW) will be his last. If that's the case, why not dump the old belts Joe? This is the most important question I want answered. Is he keeping the belts to simply lengthen his reign as champion? Or is he keeping them to put on the line against someone else after RJJ... ie Kelly Pavlik?

I think he will fight pavlik as long as he has a descent showing again jones.

If he scrapes past jones then he will call it a day :good

Yeah i wouldn't be surprised if he had another fight.

Especially after saying he wants his last fight in front of a home crowd.

I think (and hope) he'll have one more fight in Cardiff before calling it a day.

As for his potential opponent, he's doing the smart thing and keeping all his options open.

He's keeping the belts because in a couple of months he beats Joe Louis' record for the amount of time as world champion.

I also think if he wins he has one more fight in Cardiff.

This American thinks it's a **** poor fight for someone of Calzaghe's position in the boxing world and shameless attempt at protecting his perfect record. He's going after a huge name in the boxing game, another fighter who is well past his best and making a grab for the money and nothing more.

I do think that there's a contingency in the boxing public that are hoping that some how Jones can muster up some old magic and pull off the upset but I don't see it.

And I don't believe for second that Calzaghe will ever step foot in the ring with Pavlik.

As an American, but more importantly a boxing fan, I am not sure why people are so convinced Calzaghe will avoid Pavlik. Despite his height Pavlik isn't that big, he has only come in at 170 on fight night, which is smaller than Calzaghe, Kessler or Abraham. His lone fight against a quality foe north of 160, his 164 tilt vs Taylor, was an uninspiring performance. With his lack of mobility at 168, and what seemed to be a drop off in power, you have to figure Calzaghe's speed, mobility, and decent punching power (he busted up Lacy badly and almost dropped Kessler) will carry him to victory vs Pavlik.

Its the American way...We love to see our cowboys get one last hooray in the spotlight. This is Jones swansong, if he can pull off the win it would be great...If he doesnt then oh well, it was still a HOF career and he will still go down as the greatest of his era or at least one of the greatest.

A drop off in power at 164?? Yeah, that extra 4 pounds must have really weighed him down. Or maybe the fact that he hurt his hand in the 1st half of the fight may have something to do with it??

Well said ..For all the slapping crap Joe gets he sure was able to bust up Lacy ..I think in the Hopkins fight it was difficult for him to really put his hands together because at everyturn he had to fend off a hug ..

I also feel that Pavlik is as proven as Lacy was but maybe a step above considering Taylor being the best opponent between the 2 .Pavlik is a slow and mithodical power puncher ..The one thing i'll give him credit is that he keeps coming but against a fighter who is very capable of adapting to any fighters style this would be a nightmare for Kelly ..Just look at his fights with Taylor ..When Taylor was backed up he was out the fight when Taylor pressed he made it competitve ..I think Joe would just be to busy for Kelly ..Once he gets out of Kelly's punching range where his power is most effective Kelly imo would get out boxed .

This American totally agrees with you. Joe Calzaghe has managed to prove all the doubters right in one fell swoop.

As far as Joe fighting Pavlik after Jones, that would be a really stupid move on joe's part. If things go like they look like they might, Pavlik will fight Winky Wright, and Arthur Abraham before a fight with Joe could be made. Pavlik gets better and moves closer to his peak while Joe gets older and further from his:patsch

No he has only pleased his haters ...I can't beleive how much people discredit Joe for not opting to fight Kelly Pavlik ..Its like what he has done up to this point is meanigless becuase he failed to fight Pavlik ..I have been a critic of Joe ever since he ducked the Road Warrior but I giv him credit for what he done thus far he has more than made up for that but no matter what he does it seems he will never do right by anyone ..I would love to see this many threads on Pavlik and Abraham if he chose not to fight him ..

Just imagine how big this fight would be to boxing fans if it was Calzaghe - Pavlik at MSG for the 168 and 175 belts!

You'd have to say the #1 p4p could also be up for grabs there since it's not as if Pac has cemented his position there by beating one top 10 LW.
