Just a question based on the thread is Calzaghe an ATG. Im not knowledgeable to give a truthfull answer to the question but... I read posts where people say if Calzaghe had of fought in America sooner he would be etc, but what difference does it make as to where his fights took place? My question is except for perhaps Jones who was in the division above, who didnt Calzaghe fight that was willing to meet him? Collins retired in the build up to meeting Calzaghe, Ottkes trainer admits Ottke didnt want to know in fighting Calzaghe, and Hopkins back in around 02 agreed to the fight in America and then back tracked in wanting more money, only to go on and fight for less. In American SMWs Calzaghe beat Brewer, Lacy, Mitchell, Manfredo who was in the ring mag top 10 at the time and Sheika plus sub par American SMWs in Pudwill, McIntyre, Jiminez. Also he beat Reid, Woodhall, Veit (who holds a win and a loss to current WBO champ Braehmer), Bika, Starie, Eubank and Kessler. He retired undefeated at 46-0 & won Ring belts in LHW and SMW divisions and in the SMW division won and then defended the WBO belt 21 times and also won the WBC, WBA and IBF titles went up to LHW and beat THE RING champ Hopkins who is still in some polls rated as #1 LHW. When Calzaghe entered world class in the SMW division Toney was fighting at CW & Jones at LHW, SO who was Calzaghe meant to of fought in the SMW division who was willing to fight him that he didnt fight? No one complains about guys like Hopkins and Hagler staying in there division and in alot of cases making a name fighting guys from a lower division, so what was he supposed to do?
Based on his career. No. Did he have the potential? Yes! He was just the unfortunate inheritor of a bad era during his reign. He tried to make a fight back in his younger days with hopkins, but fact is hopkins blew the fight that was agreed upon. If joe had turned pro in 1988 instead of 93' i believe he would've had the fights all fans wanted and would've been able to prove whether he was ATG or not. As it stands he will be enshrined into canastota sooner or later.
It's not so much the "location" of the fight, it's just that while the BEST competition for him was fighting in America, he chose to stand strong and stay in Europe demanding people come to him....knowing damn well they wouldn't
Again who didnt he fight that would fight him, he beat American SMWS BREWER, MITCHELL, LACY, SHEIKA & MANFREDO
I wasnt asking where he should be placed in the rankings, it could be in the bottom 1000 for all I care, just about who he should have fought
He wouldn't fight Jones in America. He demanded Jones come to him. This is when Jones was the top fighter in the world too. Don't mention Manfredo, him alone may keep Joe out of the HOF
This moron must be talking about joe coming to the states to fight echols. He just started watching the sport.
You must of forgot Calzaghe was the champion , why would he travel to America to fight Echoles? He lost twice to Hpkins at MW and had been beaten previously. Sounds like your clutching at straws with that one, and also it was Echoles that backed out of fighting Calzaghe, he was offered the fight and backed out if you recall. I remember an article where Warren produced the contract to prove it and Calzaghe was happy to travel to America for Hopkins and Germany for Ottke but both didnt want to know
Dude, i'm not saying he had to. I was knocking the poster you responded to. There was absolutely no reason for joe to go to america to fight other than hopkins.
Calzaghe was one of the greatest fighters of his generation. Better than Hopkins and James Toney - 2 fighters that are considered to be ATGs so therefor Joe is an ATG too.
yes he will be. the fighting in america earlier is irrelevent. best 168 fighters for 8 of the 10 years calzaghe was ayt the top were europeans. between ottke and calzaghe they cleared the best of american 168 fighters , and not a single bernard hopkins 160 victim or fighter who came up in weight from 97 to 2005 did anything at 168. calzaghe and warren should have given beyer and ottke a lot of money for unification matches. this is where calzaghes biggest fault lies in terms of 168 division. does not matter that both parties never really wanted it, it should have happened and calzaghe`s 168 legacy is hurt as a result. should calzaghe have stepped up in weight ? should bernard hopkins have stepped up in weight ? some fighters go through weights , some fighters do not, i do not think having 3 belts at different weights means as much as it used to because of the 4 belts and fighters picking and chosing there way through divisions as once they never had that option. but in 10/20/30 years time when talking about 168 , calzaghes name will alwys be in the mix and history has taught us that fighters abilities and legend grow by boxing historians the longer they are retired.
I agree he could have made more to have fought Jones than the odd call out, but other than Jones who I mentioned who else? Jones was in the division above anyway, and not competing in Calzaghes division. The awful Manfredo fight was made for you boys to help gain exposure for fighting in America, but Manfredo was in the ring top 10 when they fought. Hopkins dosent get the same critics for not rematching Jones when he was a known commodity in the LHW division and lets not forget Jones has that PEDs cloud over him now
Pavlik. After calling out a MW who called his bluff and offered him a career high pay day, he turned around and fought a guy he called shot on many occasions, including his autobiography FFS. Kessler, Joe's best win by far, was recently embarrassed so now we are seeing 'revival' threads like Joe WOULD have beaten Kelly if he hadn't turned tail and run. Give it a rest. History already had all it will to judge his career and it won't be all that kind.
