Yeah I read his autobiography as well, I think he did it for the same reason that Hopkins is for: 1: the Money 2: to have a Jones win on his resume (even though its meaningless now, Jones hasnt beat anyone worth mentioning since 03)
can't believe the number of braindead americans on this thread. the ignorance never ever ceases to amaze me.
Joe Calzaghe is a first ballot hall of famer and an ATG. He's definitely the best super middleweight of the past 15 years and probably top 3 SM of all time. This is coming from a B-Hop fan.
Then later someone put a post on here saying Calzaghe was happy even to travel to America to face Jones as well, so it seems Calzaghe didnt avoid fighting abroad, not that hed have had to, and cant say ive read details on Jones not wanting to meet Calzaghe but Hopkins and Ottke didnt want to, so how can he not have a high career standing when other fighters wouldnt face him, and he beat the best available competition who would meet him in his own division
If you watch the Calzaghe doc called "not your average Joe" Warren talks about trying to make a fight with Jones and Jones asking for a ridicoulous amount of money. Hopkins asked for 6M and Taylor asked for 10M, which is why those fights never happened.
A lot of people would class Hopkins as a ATG with no problem, but if you compare their resumes you will notice they are very close, one guy is rated top 80 and the other guy is dismissed Hopkins beating Tito=Calzaghe beating Lacy Hopkins beating Johnson=Calzaghe beating Shieka Hopkins beating Joppy=Calzaghe beating Reid Hopkins beating Holmes=Calzaghe beating Kassler Hopkins beating Tarver=Calzaghe beating Hopkins Hopkins beating Oscar=Calzaghe beating Mitchell Also take into account that Hopkins has lost to the following fighters: Mitchell,Jones, Taylor*2 and Calzaghe I would say they should be placed close on the ATG list where ever you decide to place them.
Its silly when people say if Calzaghe had of been fighting in America he would of had a few losses on his record, but at the time he came through, against who? He beat the top American SMWs around in Brewer, Mitchell, Sheika, Manfredo (who was in the ring top 10 when Calzaghe beat him) and Lacy, not to mention some of the sub par American competition. If Collins, Ottke, Taylor, Hopkins and Jones didnt want to fight him/priced themselves out, hows that Calzaghes fault? A good thing also is that his record isnt padded with alot of big name smaller fighters. In the young SMW division he is an ATG which should in theory make him a great, if he was the best of a division, regardless of what the division is. The CW division isnt much older yet Holyfield is rightly paraded as the best CW ever, and when he contested in the division it was very young. Yes Holyfield went on to have a great career at HW but his accomplishments at CW dont get forgotton
