He's very effective at what he does, but let's be real, the only reason he's able to get away with such a limited skill-set and physical tools is because of the complete lack of opposition at the baby weights. Props to him for his consistency, but he lacks the versatility and range of skills to be called a master boxer. He'd more than likely be overwhelmed by any of the top offensive fighters to have fought at the Jr. Flyweights like Chang, Gushiken, Lopez, Yuh, and Matlala. Hell, I think a Dodie Boy Penalosa would've been too much for him, and Zapata was like Calderon on steroids. Not trying to hate, just trying to put things into perspective. Calderon will go down as one of the best fighters ever at 105 due to the complete lack of depth, not because he's actually one of the best boxers ever. He's kinda like a smaller version of a past prime Camacho.
Agreed those fighter's you mentioned would have overwhelmed Calderon Lopez especially, To me Calderon is a slick p4p pure boxer. Calling him a master boxer i think its more out of appreciation for his skills rather than the technical meaning of the word at least that's how i look at it.
Probably one of the most over-rated fighters around. How he cracks anybodies top 10 P4P is beyond me.
He's a good little boxer no doubt, but I'm with Sweet Pea on this one that it's the lack of talent in the weight classes that makes him look better than he actually is. And despite the lack of talent, he still won't fight the top guys like Brian Viloria or Edgar Sosa or Ulises Solis. I don't see how his resume is strong enough to get him in a top 10 P4P list.
Good to see people agreeing. Calderon is a tight boxer and when people question his resume they put it down to having no competition which he has a fair bit of. Think i read he moved up to fight stiffer competition but minimum weight has picked up lately maybe he could move back down and clean house.
Well, Calderon has stated he wants Brian Viloria after Mayol, and i think that Calderon school's Viloria because of Viloria's slow pace, Solis i feel is just a smaller version of Margarito minus the chin, I think that Calderon is just at another level than Solis,Viloria or Sosa and as far as the lack of talent in the weight classe's go that's not really Calderon's fault. Calderon is arguably the best 105/108-pound fighter at present time and one of best pure boxer's in the game.
I like Calderon, and I am hoping that some other station records this fight. The man is a PURE boxer, if you can't appreciate that, you cannot appreciate The Sweet Science.
Im a huge fan of the Cotto/JuanMa style but there's something about the Calderon style that you can't help but to appreciate.
Exactly. I don't understand why people label this kind of boxer as 'boring'. I like big-punching KO artists as much as the next man, but I love to watch a guy like Calderon who relies on actual learned boxing skills and atheltic ability.
