    A ref could have let him go on easily. Some would have (ie Smoger). A lot wouldn't. It's a discretionary issue. There was nothing wrong with stopping it there, and there wouldn't have been anything wrong with giving him one more chance to get through the round w/o a 4th knockdown.

    Ishida beat the **** out of poor Kirkland. Personally I don't think that the guy is feather-fisted but anyway I think that Kirkland is done. Sadly because for a moment it looked like we could have great match up in Kikrland-Angulo. A pressure fighter with no chin is a joke

    Kirkland will be around. He is a good kid who needs direction and some new elements in training. I was impressed he never tried to hold really and maybe he will be more determined to stay on his feet and out of harms way his next time out. Kirkland will be back (in prison)

    That's all I would have liked to see. I just don't feel he was hurt nearly enough to stop the fight. Didn't Cortez ref Pac/JMM when he was dropped 3 times in the first? Of course not the same situation... But didn't JMM get hit by Pac when he was already on the canvas from the third knockdown? JMM went completely flat on the canvas after that but Cortez let him beat the count and continue without issue. He jumps completely on Kirkland after his third knockdown without even giving him a chance... Just saying doesn't seem right....

    Marquez's powers of recovery are legendary. Kirkland's so far...do not seem like anything to write home about.

    Sure, he came back to beat Conyers...and was standing there clear-eyed at the end against Ishida...but it's all about the look on his face, body language, the softness in his legs...his recovery is not elite (and neither is his punch resistance, meaning he's average or less in both of the main components of "chin")

    Here's what happened:

    Ishida= Kobayashi
    Kirkland= Oscar Mayer Wiener

    The kid was too rusty to ever compete with Ishida, who punches like a welterweight, but can flash some leather. Ishida would have knocked his rusty ass+china chin down every time he opened up.

    Definitely not the same situation.. Guess I just haven't seen anything from Kirkland to suggest he wouldn't have gotten back up and continued if given the chance. He seemed to get hurt when hit clean and fast, but given his fighting style I would hope/assume he'd be able to recover between rounds. I think it was Ishida's speed more than power.

    I personally wouldn't have stopped the fight but I guess it wasn't 'bull****'.

    The guy was hurt period, if he has done that to Ishida I'm sure "firm but fair" (I don't like either) would had had stop the fight too.

    Ishidas had like 8 KO's his whole career. Man, Kirkland has the biggest glass jaw. :lol:

    It was definitely speed. Ishida's not a huge puncher. Those were just crisp, fast shots from a bigger man.

    The thing is, if Kirkland can't deal with speed now after several years in the game...:verysad. It ain't like he's some green 10-0 young buck with plenty of time to learn good defense and unlearn his bad habits..

    Barkley-Benn was a perfect example of the 3 knockdown rule preventing a potentially great fight from reaching its natural conclusion.

    Last night's fight wasnt & could not be more different. (I know the 3kd rule wasnt applied 2 this fight)

    Good stoppage by Cortez imo though I am sure there are people on this forum who would have preferred to see him suffer serious damage.

    Kirkland falls in with all his punches and his left side is always wide open. Ishida couldnt miss. Good stoppage. Totally outclassed.

    It wasn't a 'quick recovery' though. If you know boxing, you know that really. Each time he got up he was wobbled by almost every shot Ishida landed and made to do a funny dance. He reached his feet but, like Wlad vs Sanders, more than enough damage had been done.
