I saw a replay of the Toney-Holyfield fight from a few years back on ESPN 2. As off as Holyfield looked in this fight you still cannot minimize Toney's tactical brilliance in dismantling the old and injured warrior. It got me to thinking:

    1. Would Toney have been a stylistic nightmare for any incarnation of the legendary 'Real Deal'?

    2. Would Toney have still beaten the razor-sharp Evander of 89' who outlasted Dokes, the 1990 Holyfield who beat Douglass, the 1996-97' Holyfield who looked sensational in destroying Tyson and Moorer?

I need some feedback here because you guys are the best boxing experts around IMO on this classic forum. I honestly think the Toney that evening in October 2003 might have beaten any - maybe even the best Holyfield. Thanks.

I'd like to be wrong because I'm a much bigger fan of the classy 'Real Deal' than I am of trashtalkers like Toney. His skills at that time were considerable though.

Holyfield by that point was far removed from even the already fading version who fought Tyson and Moorer. At their Heavyweight bests, I see Holyfield outboxing and outworking Toney pretty handily. At the stages mentioned, I'd still favor Holyfield to outwork him with the jab and fight well on the inside.

So would you take him over the Holyfield that stopped Tyson?

Evander was past his prime. When he showed flashes of his former self in that first round, he completely dominated Toney and made it look easy. It wasn't until Evander started to fade was when Toney displayed his ''tactical brillinace'' that you saw. It was left hook city. He went to the body effectively, countered and out boxed Toney when he had the gass. The peak Evander that just moved up to heavyweight or even the one that beat up and exposed Tyson for the no heart fighter that he was, knocks out Toney. Prime Evander didn't stop punching, as opposed to the 2003 washed up version of Holyfield that had previously suffered heart conditions and had already loss to Chris Byrd, Moorer, Bowe ect and half of those losses were because of his condition, especially the Moorer lost.

Blah blah Kevin Rooney wasn't in his corner? He was past his prime? Better yet, he wasn't focused and mentally recked? Please, truthfully, Evander was further past his prime than Tyson was and had more losses than Tyson. Tyson does not like to be pushed back because it always threw him out of his game. Evender completely has his number.

Sounds kind of like your incessant whining and excuses regarding Toney in the Roy Jones bout.

Toney always had heart and that was always Tyson's downfall. because he had none. I didn't say anything about Tyson having weight trouble and that was always Toney's downfall. An in shape Toney has a shot at beating Jones. Tyson has always lost when a top notch fighter fought him back and hes never came back from a losing position to win a fight. Hes also never came back from a knock down either.

I didn't say those were your arguments, I was basically saying how the hell are you going to throw his excuses about Tyson out when you do the same for Toney? And no, Toney never had a shot at beating Jones.

Toney looked good, but most of it was because Holyfield just couldn't get his punches off and gassed early. I think the Holyfield that knocked out Tyson wins a decision over Toney, but the late 80's Evander wins more easily.

I think the 212 lbs Holyfield that fought Tyson matches up great against big punchers, whereas the faster and more active young Holyfield does better against someone like Toney. He's not gonna knock out Toney anyway: his higher workrate when he was younger will cause him to drop few rounds to Toney, who rarely threw more than 30 punches a round at that point.

Look at the fight again. Every counter right hand that Toney threw landed and that was once every round. An in shape Toney was far more percise with his punches, more accurate and far busier. He was the only fighter back then that had the ability to take advantage of Jones defensive holes and he blew it my coming in unprepared.

Tyson on the other hand, never had heart so he was hopeless against Holyfield or any elite boxer. That was something that he could not be taught. If Toney would have come in shape, then we might have seen an upset.

Knocks out Toney you say? I have never seen anyone come close to knocking Toney out. Even huge punchers like Peter and Rahman never really had him ready to go. Thanks for weighing in and I appreciate your input though.

To bad Toney never goes to work until the 2nd or 3rd round. He always feels his opponent out in the 1st round.
