This thread is for everyone to talk about the past, present and future of Japanese boxing, so whether you want to talk about a current champion like Toshiaki Nishioka and Koki Kameda, greats like Fighting Harada and Yoko Gushiken or just a recent fight you've seen etc. then this is the place to do it :thumbsup

I was thinking of setting up the thread like the brilliant Encyclopedia one, where this post will be used to link to others made in the thread (obviously I'm not expecting the same level of response!). I'll also keep this post updated with other stuff like what upcoming fights are coming up, who are the 'world' champions etc.

I've included those that you mentioned from the Encyclopedia thread. Thanks for everything else as well, sounds good :good

Any type of contribution is fine, plus I'm sure with the amount of Japan vs. Mexico fights that happened last year, you'll be posting here quite a bit :bbb

I completely forgot about that thread; sorry for stealing your thunder

BUT, my title is now better... ;)

A date has been set for the highly anticipated WBC world championship fight between, Vic Darchinyan (37-4-1, 27ko) and Japan’s undefeated WBC bantamweight champion, Shinsuke Yamanaka (15-0-2, 11ko). The showdown will take place on April 6 in Tokyo, Japan. Darchinyan is highly-motivated for the upcoming fixture and is using the potential status as a three-weight world champion as motivation during training camp.

Promoter Gary Shaw confirmed: “The date has been agreed upon for April 6. Darchinyan will have to travel into unfamiliar territory and show the world why he’s one of the best fighters walking the earth. Capturing a world title in three divisions will put Vic in the history books as one of the greatest.”

Darchinyan, determined to make history stated: “I’m going to seize this opportunity the WBC has given me with everything I got. My heart and soul will be poured into this training camp and I’m going to be in the best shape of my life. My team and I are ready for war! Nothing is going to stop me from bringing home that third world championship.”

Darchinyan’s manager and advisor Elias Nassar added: “I want to thank Gary Shaw for putting this fight together. He works hard behind the scenes and needs to be commended for his efforts. Yamanaka is a young hungry fighter, but I believe Vic’s experience and power will be the keys to him being victorious.

“Team Darchinyan is ready to go.”

    More news for today:

Rungvisai to Defend WBC Super Flyweight Title Against Sato in Japan

    This content is protected

It has recently been announced that Suriyan Sor Rungvisai will defend his WBC super flyweight title against WBC #3 Yota Sato on the 27th March at the Korakuen Hall, Japan.

Rungvisai (20-4-1), generally regarded as the number one super flyweight in the world, acquired the WBC belt when he defeated Tomas Rojas by decision in August. After that minor upset, the 22-year old Thailander successfully defended the title against Japan's all-action Nobuo Nashiro with a hard-fought points win in November.

Sato (23-2-1) is the long-standing Japanese super flyweight champion and holds an unbeaten record that stretches back to 2005. The 27-year old scored his biggest win to date when defeating former two-time 'world' title challenger Kohei Kono over ten rounds in April of last year.

Uchiyama Wants Gamboa, Pondering Fight Overseas Next

    This content is protected

Hard punching WBA super featherweight champion Takashi Uchiyama returned to training camp last week ahead of a proposed in-ring return in May. His main focus, however, is securing a fight with one of the 'bigger players' in boxing.

One of the names that has been bandied about is Yuriorkis Gamboa.

With the super featherweight division lacking any marquee names, the planned move up in weight by Gamboa (21-0) has not gone unnoticed by Uchiyama (18-0) or his advisor's. The 30-year old Cuban superstar is scheduled to begin his transition to the super featherweight division in early March against an opponent to be confirmed.

Due to the difficulty of being able to bring Gamboa over to Japan, Hitoshi Watanabe, chairman of the Watanabe gym that Uchiyama fights out of, has stated that fighting abroad is a possible choice for his charge's next contest.

The 32-year old Uchiyama, rumoured also to be interested in a unification fight with countryman Takahiro Aoh, returned from injury to score a highlight reel KO over Jorge Solis last month.

Kogawa Hoping for Another Title Shot this Year

    This content is protected

26-year old former OPBF super flyweight champion Takuya Kogawa is hoping to earn himself another 'world' title opportunity in 2012.

In his previous crack at a championship, Kogawa (17-2) travelled to Thailand in an ambitious effort to dethrone flyweight king Pongsaklek Wonjongkam. Although valiant, he dropped a wide decision to his more experienced foe.

Now on the comeback trail and firmly settled into the 112-pound division, Kogawa is scheduled to face compatriot Shigetaka Ikehara for the vacant Japanese flyweight title on the 26th January. A win here could see the talented speedster get back into contention at world level.
