Since it's a long time overdue,...it's time for a Jimmy Young Appreciation thread. Perhaps the unluckiest, most often unappreciated and shat upon old master of the ring...a certifiable defensive boxing genius...a genuine artist of the ring...I give you the conqueror of Muhammad Ali, Ken Norton, Ron Lyle and the young George Foreman...I submit for your approval,...and if you have any appreciation for the artistic side of boxing, I give you the great Jimmy Young!!! Oh yes, I forgot,..EAT IT YOU HATERS!! This content is protected Thank you haZNAgod.
A fan... of Jimmy Young? I never thought I'd see the day I saw a Young super fan. He was good and remains underrated. Horrible style though.
If Ali had done it you Ali worshippers would be falling all over yourselves...trying to out do each other claiming "GENIUS"!!!!
Well I’m Ali’s biggest fan, and watched that fight at the time and I thought Young won. Never watched it since so don’t know if I would change my opinion. I always thought Minter got a raw deal against Hamsho having only watched it at the time, having recently rewatched it Hamsho certainly won ok. I need to watch the Ali v Young fight again.
Between Saggy McMantits here and Nicolino Locche I can't imagine a much more negative style. Very unpleasant to watch.
He was most certainly robbed against Norton, Ali is debatable and George purposely carried Young but ran out of steam late. A great fighter that certainly needs the respect he deserves BUT not the respect he didn't earn take a look at the circumstances of his victories the condition of the greats he undid is what you should pay attention to.
cobra, don't forget, he probably beat a prime Shavers too! Unpleasant to watch???? Must be a wrestling fan. The man was at home in the ring, so comfortable, at ease, a totally pleasant style to watch.
I really admired Jimmy Young, a humble fighter, as well as a good professional. Even though I think that Ali is the greatest, I really believe that Jimmy won the fight that night. Sure, it was post Manila Ali, and he was far from his prime years, 1964-1967, Young did win it, except for the sticking his head outside the ropes. I won $10.00 off of the Jimmy Young vs George Foreman bout, on March 17 1977, based on what I had seen in his previous bout against Ron Lyle. He even used Rope A Dope on George, when he was hurt in round 7. Jimmy decked Foreman, in round 12, proving George had problems with his stamina, Jimmy by unanimous 12 round decision. The Ken Norton fight, on Nov 5 1977, for the WBC Heavyweight Title, Jimmy did enough to win, even staggering Ken, with fast combos, during the bout and marking Norton's face, but Ken was awarded the split decision. Later Ken was named champion, as Ali agreed to have a rematch with Leon Spinks instead. Too bad for Jimmy things did not go his way, but I thought he was as I said before, a very good fighter.
