The JMM that fought Casamayor vs Duran-could JMM survive long enough to do damage?

Duran is generally considered the best lightweight of all time, and with good reason. We all know his blistering offense (and underrated defense) are a nightmare for pretty much anyone within a 60 pound range of the man, and nearly unbeatable within his best division. Few lightweight boxers in history match up as favorites against Manos de Piedra H2H, if any at all.

One fantasy opponent that intrigues me against Duran is Juan Manuel Marquez.

When recently watching the bout against Casamayor, I was examining the subtleties of Marquez's counter-punching. While Joel Casamayor's reflexes weren't what they used to be, he had plenty of speed, stamina, and ring savy as part of his own game counter-punching style that night. As the medium-intensity match progressed and Marquez adjusted, he defined what makes him his own fighter; his ability to use defensive techniques to compliment effective and aggressive offense. When referring to his style, his counter-punching title supersedes only that of a combination puncher.

Unlike the patterns of a Whitaker or Mayweather, defense is not the priority, but a precursor and after thought to the execution of a sharp offensive engagement. In this match in particular, Marquez was able to employ a slick (a word many would not use at all to describe the Marquez of today) defensive posture of constant slipping, shuffling, bobbing & weaving, employed skilfully after sharp and impactful sets of punches; a stiff 1-2 evolving from a parried jab to the body, an inside slip-and-counter left hook over the outside of the right southpaw jab, all in one fluid motion.

Because of JMM's defensive abilities combined with his durability, technical prowess, recovery talent, comfort under pressure, creative and varied offensive arsenal, and proven ability to lead as well as counter, I think he would make a great opponent against Roberto Duran. The 135 Marquez who knocked out Casamayor in my opinion would have a good chance of getting a win over Hands of Stone.

As said before, it's hard to find someone who would be a favorite against Duran, especially a fighter who gets dropped often and is rather small at the weight- JMM would certainly be no favorite; but both men bring a versatility that match up well with each other and are sure to produce fireworks and awe inspiring displays of technical competition. Both men throw great uppercuts, target both body and head, punch with intention, use volume and accuracy to their advantage, adjust as the fight progresses, and can lead/counter.

As a fan of both, I hope you guys can appreciate my points without wrongly interpreting it as nuthugging on JMM's part (I'm sure quite a few consider the proposal blasphemy) and let me know what you think! :bbb

That's quite an insightful post..obviously youve spent a bit of time thinking about this and there is some good analysis in there.

Though I don't feel this requires as much thought...JMM will hang for quite some time, he likely make Duran look a little uncomfortable sometimes like say Lampkin did with his neat skills and straight punching.

But ultimately he gets immersed in carnage..and brutally stopped. I believe it take a Duran level beating to take down Marquez before the final bell..he does not go quietly.

This would be a superb match up & JMM is an extreamly underated technician IMO but he's going to ship some serious damage & as the fight goes into the later rounds this will tell as it's always going to be a bad exchange rate of 2/1 or even 3/1 as the fight goes into the later rounds. Duran's defence is the diff here & whatever JMM throws out he's going too also be receiving plenty in return.

This is a fight that suits JMM style & as we've seen against Diaz he can reply with plenty of accurate hurtfull combinations when cornered or off the ropes when under severe pressure but once Duran's on his chest he's going too slowly & systematicly beat the life out of JMM. This couuld be stopped on cuts late on or more than likely a Gomez/Pintor ending. It would'nt suprise me to see Duran put on his arse as he was in 74 against DeJesus early on but it won't halt the intensity of the tide of violence that will eventually drown JMM in a classic.

The very best Marquez would find it almost impossible to win exchanges against someone with the integration of defence and offense that Duran had, he's too straight up, too static and reliant on outright textbook punching finesse without the defensive nous or control of distance to take things to the level someone like Dejesus operated at, to say nothing of Duran.

The older, smaller, slower Marquez of recent years...

To beat Duran he would need to control the exchanges and the infighting and in doing so no doubt be the harder puncher and better defensive fighter....Marquez i ever saw looked capable of it.He's not going to be sliding around giving crafty angles, or certainly not the vulgar overt lateral movement a Leonard, Fernandez or Bizarro might employ. He won't be popping a jab and piling up points.

At best i see this going like the Villa or third Dejesus fight for him.More likely i feel a mid-round knockout after a thorough thrashing.

I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum from you though, i feel a relatively slow or flat footed, punching orientated technician matches poorly unless they can compensate with greater physicality and power(Ike Williams, Gans etc), while coming close in durability.Marquez is smaller, weaker and doesn't hit as hard. He's not got as good a chin.

I'll think about this match later. For now i'd just like to point out that your defense ceases to be underrated when every poster calls it ATG defense whilst calling it underrated, and people make videos celebrating ATG defensive skills and have him up along side Whitaker, Pep, Mayweather and Locche

Marquez is having his moments here and I see him giving Duran a real fight and landing some crisp counters and pot shots the way he does, he'd land those beautiful combinations too.

Duran has the better defense, better chin, better power, is stronger at the weight. But I think the power in Marquez's counters keeps Duran honest and likely sees him going into the late rounds or the distance, the fight would also be closer earlier

Nice post. I agree 100% with this.

I believe Duran was even more technical then JMM. Duran would not have been hit as much Diaz and Katsidis were able to do to JMM. Then you add it Duran hits much harder than JMM. Also Duran had more dimensions in what he could do go forward, box etc.

Duran wins this fight by middle round TKO and it is not even close.

There's a reason I picked the Casamayor fight specifically, and it is because his reflexes were fresher and he was less prone to the punishment taken in the Diaz fight, and also in the Katsidis fight. He does give those angles, shows above average hand speed, and good footspeed and movement that you claim he doesn't have to pull the job off.

Again, I'm not saying he's the favorite; in the end, it seems Marquez would not be able to physically handle the punishment dished out by Duran. Duran is better in too many areas. But to say he doesn't have the defense or creativeness to make it close I think denies his often overlooked abilities before his noticeable slips.

See, i see nothing from that fight to change my opinion.More than anything having a quick look at a few minutes of that fight again reminds me of what a sloppy tired looking fighter Casamayor had become.

Marquez could a lot of decent solid lightweights really tough fights and win plenty, but i don't think he is bothering any greats or borderline greats.

Good points. Especially the limitations of a flat-footed boxer/ puncher, that got me thinking.

Simply put, Marquez is game but severely outgunned here.

...I don't see Marquez being competitive at all. Like Katsidis and Diaz, Casamayor was also enjoying a fair bit of success in his fight with JMM.

Duran is a few levels above these guys and has Marquez beat in virtually every conceivable area.

So now JMM is a flat-footed boxer-puncher? :think

He wouldn't lose due to anything like that.

Duran would effortlessly work his way inside...he could do it against JMM in his sleep...and there's only one winner there. Diaz got on the inside and had a lot of success, but he was ultimately being outscored due to his wide, inaccurate punches, but Duran is more precise, and throws with better technique. I see this massacre getting stopped around round 7. Marquez will land some counters, but I've seldom seen a fighter with better defense than Duran on the inside, he should get hit square a lot more than he does, but he remains elusive. The first Ray Leonard fight is evidence of this.
