The JMM that fought Casamayor vs Duran-could JMM survive long enough to do damage?

He did not go tooth and nail with Casamayor. Watch the fight again. The first three rounds were close, with Marquez taking a lead from there on with the exception of maybe two rounds before the knockout.

He did not go tooth and nail with Katsidis either. He caught a good hard left and went down, and the fight was definitely competitive, but Marquez was consistently landing the harder shots and rolling with punches and countering.

He was definitely challenged with the volume Diaz as his reflexes faded, but people exaggerate the closeness in some of the recent wars he's been in.

I thought he had the edge in all of the fights, especially Katsidis, but he just didn't show the kind of defensive awareness necessary for me to believe he'd fare too well against any manner of elite Lightweight, much less Duran. He takes far too many shots to get off his own. I don't even think he'd be competitive with Duran after a few rounds, honestly.

Fair enough, I simply thought his defense and reflexes in the Casamayor fight was just slippery and sharp enough to give him more a shot than his take-to-give fallback used against Diaz.

Nacho has talked about how he has consciously switched styles to become more exciting and marketable. Who knows if he can switch back at will; he was bending at the waist and slipping much more against Katsidis than Diaz, perhaps feeling he could take the hits from the baby bull unlike the former, and didn't seem to take any unnecessary risks against el cepillo.

Sure its a very subjective term...but I don't think you really feel the term "great" covers a guy like Casamayor or really that close. I know you are sharper than that PP.

In order to be competitive at a weight above your natural with one of the all-time natural elites at that weight, you really really need to be a seriously special fighter - eg, Robinson would of course be competitive with Monzon and Hagler, and Montreal Duran was competitive with Leonard and IMO would be with anyone else at ww as well.

Juan Manuel Marquez was a 126/130lbs fighter, he should not be expected to be competitive with a peak 135lbs Duran, it's not fair on him and he simply isn't good enough to make it interesting.

Unless Duran is 100%, I would make JMM the favourite. I think JMM often fights to the level of his opponent and when he faces great opponents, he usually puts in great performances.

If Duran if at 100%, his strength would be a deciding factor. A prime Duran brought everything to the table (and some extras) and I would pick him to win a clear decision over the JMM that fought Casamayor.

Duran all the time for me in this. Marquez at lightweight even in the Casamayor fight isn't as defensively sharp as the featherweight version and gets hit a fair bit. Thats ok if its a Juan Diaz who can't punch out of a paper bag but Duran at lightweight hit hard. Mid round Ko Duran for me. Wrong fight and style for JMM

Even if Marquez was a natural lightweight, and had the best fight of his career there, and was facing Duran on the worst night of his lightweight career, I still think Duran would win.

The Marquez that fought Casamayor would get mercilessly beat up by Duran until the ref put JMM out of his misery. Probably by the midway point, which is a testament to how much heart he has and how much punishment he is able to absorb.
