Inspired by a post from My Dinner With Conteh last week. I liked Joe,but he really infuriated us at times, did n't he ? When he was purely in survival mode. How many others, over the years, followed his ezample ? Ones that go through my mind are Johnny Nelson in his 'fight' against Carlos De Leon. He must have stuck his tongue out more than his jab, that night. James 'Boneclutcher' Smith v Mike Tyson. Smith hit Tyson with one good punch in the last round, which led many of us to ask where the hell he'd been for the previous eleven. And how about James 'Quick but not much else' Tillis, who ran around the ring, when he boxed for Mike Weaver's WBA title ? I'm sure there are plenty more that I've forgotten for the moment. Remind me,please.
Juan LaPorte comes to mind. Great jaw, but needed a fire under his arse to get him going. And on that note, I'll also bring up David Tua. Loved him when he threw punches, but do you know how many times I screamed at the TV, "Throw your punches!!"? Scartissue
I'd forgotten about Scott Welch,in his fight against Henry Akinwande. Henry kept telling him to make a fight of it.
In the 80's and probably 90's KO magazine ran an annual "Highly Unofficial Official Awards" section and one of the awards was the "_____ just glad to be here award." I don't recall who it was named after, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't Bugner. I wish I still had my back issues so I could see who some of the recipients were over the years.
Audley Harrison seems to have the "Bugner Gene" Marvellous Physique and Tools at his disposal, and yet his eyes often going wide with apprehension when an opponent gets too close, can an old leopard change his spots ...? (and make HAYE whilst the sun shines...?) The Last Chane Saloon Bckons ....
