The way I see any comeback is a question of protecting yourself inside and outside the ring.

Kelly didn't have the greatest defence but I don't think he's taken too much punishment aside from the first taylor and the martinez fights.

Outside the ring he hasn't exactly treated his body like a temple.

His comeback really has to be in 3 levels, he needs a journeyman to test his comfort at the weight, then a fringe contender like jones or manfredo to test his talent and then he'd be ready for a shot at martinez in any credible fashion.

However the guys no spring chicken, this could be 2 years from now by which time martinez will have retired and kelly will be older.

He hasn't won a meaningful fight since rubio (looks good in hindsight) and we have minimal evidence to gauge where he's at now.

I'm sure even his staunchest fans want a low key comeback to see how much he's got because, the kelly of 5 years ago would have blasted and did blast anyone outside the top ten.

However my major concern is this: I believe I read that his drinking didn't start when he beat taylor, it started before. This tells me it isn't a reaction but rather it's a condition.

In a game as serious as this, prolonged absence combined with alcohol just isn't a good mix.

I say he'd need to chop an arm off to make 160. And 168 is a huge test for a recovering alcoholic, bute, kessler and froch can really bang.

I could be wrong here but genuinely see no way other than a low key, below the radar comeback. Whether he'll settle for that money is another matter.

Time and circumstances are against him and if he ever got back to his previous level this would be a historically great comeback (think tony booth on a world level).

:rofl:patsch Look nuthugger, Pavlik refused a rematch against Martinez. How did Martinez get lucky? He was the underdog against Pavlik and made him look like an amateur. :verysad

Look **** face! Pavlik declined the rematch at 160 cause he said he couldnt make 160 anymore! Then said but ill do 164 catchweight! Sergio refused the catchweight fight 2 times!

Martinez got lucky because pavlik was in rehab the LAST 2 WEEKS of a 8 week Training camp and had to drop 20 lbs thw week of fight!

LOU DIBELLA- " You could see the tired in His Eyes " That was at the weigh inn!

Make him look like a Amateur? Kelly was up on the scorecards after 8!

:rofl:patsch What planet are you on? First of all, Martinez went up in weight to fight Pavlik at the Middleweight limit of 160lbs. He then won the Championship, so why on earth should he move up further to rematch a man he already beat? What kind of logic is that? :rofl

The Champion calls the shots, not the loser. If Pavlik wanted a rematch he should have gone back down to 160lbs, but he chose not to. Your excuses are feeble at best.

Pavlik has fought once since being sliced open by Martinez, in an unconvincing win against a Mexican sanitation worker.

Martinez would have ended his career in a rematch. It's irrefutable.

Some very good posts on here. I saw Kelly about a month ago.Rustbelt, I agree with you, he looks around 175. I would love to tell the kid to come back and give it his all. One day, unfortuntely, I think he will regret that he did not. Sorry to say at this point, I think it's over!!

I'm rooting for Pavlik to get it together and get back in the mix. The SMW division is rather shallow and needs all of the competitors it can get.
If Kelly can get a couple warm up come back fights under his belt, I think Pavlik-Bute could be pretty entertaining.

I like kelly he sure is fun to watch, if he does what he says he's going to do . Stop drinking and go to calfi. and really train. he can beat any of the smw's I think a focused kelly beats froach. If we don't see Kelly in the next 6 months he may be finished. I hope he fights 3-4 times next year.

The pic above, posted by "See Me Flow" is a good example of how stupid the haters really are. Pavlik stopped drinking a year ago, and when he did drink he never drank Jack Daniels or any other whiskey. Kelly Pavlik was strictly a beer drinker. The haters are so ****ing stupid and confused they can't even hate on a guy intelligently.
