^This is exactly why he'll be back.

Pav's story is still a work in progress. When you really look at it, he hasn't been setback as badly as he could have been, considering his problems with alcohol.

I'm aboard. I've always thought he'd return to the ring. I wish him well out of the ring FIRST, and in the ring second. :bbb

    :deal agreed

according to people close to the camp, he's doing everything right, is headed in the right direction and is hungry. of course, we heard those same things prior to him going into rehab. however, this time, i havent heard any rumors to the contrary like the ones that were swirling around prior to him going into rehab.

A person does not go from casual/social drinker to full blown alcoholic overnight. Systemic subtle and insidious changes take place over the course of many years. It makes me wonder how much the majority of Pavlik's career has been affected by his drinking.

the same people who were protecting kelly from the public by saying everything was ok are the same people who are now stating that the trouble began post taylor. to that end, i think its perfectly reasonable, if not the truth, that he had a problem well before the taylor fights.

that's not a knock on the team at all. they can't be expected to air their dirty laundry in public...at the same time you gotta take what they, and any other boxer's camp, says with a grain of salt.

I work with guys that attended high school and drank with him. Pavlik has been a beer drinker for a long time. Boo is right. His disease didnt start after the Taylor fight. It just got worse and worse the more the spotlight came on him. He seems to have his head on now. I expect some great boxing out of him in the very near future.

The alcoholism had an obvious negative affect on KP, but I think the weight issues were also more significant than Team Pavlik claimed they were. I think he stayed at 160 far longer than he should have.

Here he is at 160 in 2002, and his next 11 fights took place above the middleweight limit.

Serious question, but let me set it up.

According to JSimps, the name that keeps popping up around the Pavlik camp is Bryan Vera. In my opinion the Vera/Mora fight was not as close as the score cards showed. I thought Vera beat Mora convincingly.

Mora draws a lot of hate on ESB, but I think he is a much better fighter than he generally gets credit for. The fact that Vera beat him, and has visited the SMW division many times, makes Bryan a legitimate opponent for Pavlik's come back fight.

If that fight comes off, how do you see it going. If Pavlik is to anxious to make a big impression, and goes out and tries to just run right over Vera, the fight will be harder than it needs to be. If Pavlik is patient, maintains the distance, and picks his spots, he should be able to dominate Vera, and eventually get the TKO.

How do you see it going?

vera is a tough kid who aint afraid to bang. i honestly see vera really trying to take it to kelly early and take advantage of any rust or bad vibes kelly may or may not have from the past year and really try and make kelly uncomfortable. because of this i see one of two things happening:

    1. kelly obliges him and knocks him out w/in 6 and, like you said, its a lot harder than it needs to be.

    2. he lets vera get it out of his system early, keeps him on the end of his jab, settles in and closes it out inside of 10.

but since kelly isnt hard to find, i fully expect vera to come out swinging from the opening bell with the hopes that kelly's timing is off and the application of pressure will keep his timing off.

I think it might look a lot like a shortened version of Pavlik/Zertuche, but I'd rather see KP focus on defense, patience, and smart boxing.

Vera has been stopped twice, and out boxed 3 times, so there is no glory in beating him no matter how you beat him. What Kelly needs to do is focus on putting in some quality rounds.

it would be nice to know what's going through his head....which we don't. if kelly is hungry, motivated and brimming with confidence b/c he's found the right path then all he needs is some live rounds with a live opponent. if he is kinda down about what happened and questioning himself, then steamrolling over someone, taking a couple shots but knocking him out early may help him get over what, if anything, he needs to get over.
