Lopez was not overhyped, no one really took his undefeated record too seriously because of the lack of names on it.

I agree that if that fight goes 12 rounds Pavlik stops him, he hurt Lopez bad ni the 10th. And Pavlik's defensive style makes it look like he's getting hit more than he really does.

My view wasn't the best of the fight but that is kinda what I thought I saw. Kelly has this way of putting his hand palm out and covering his lower body with his other arm that he picks a lot of shots of with. They replayed one of Lopez's 4 punch combo's where three were clean misses and one was a glancing blow that Kelly turned his head with. They think that Kelly is getting hit because they perceive him standing there to be hit when he is trying to work his way in.

Lack of experience did hurt the kid. I think he earned a shot at a 'name' and then we would have a better idea. Sartistan<sp?> was upgraded quite a bit after the Kessler fight and he did kinda hang around the fringe right under the top guys.

I hope Pavlik gets his next tune up sooner than later because Carl Moretti from TOP RANK is on his way to securing a fight against Lucian Bute in November, if Kessler is not fit to fight of course.

I think it's harsh to be too critical of him. Yeah, it wasn't the best performance but you know that Pavlik will look a lot better when he loses the ring rust.

The thing is though, even if he is a lot better in three or four fights time, I just can't imagine he'll ever be ready for the elite at his new division. He's the mandatory for Froch, so assuming all goes to plan and Froch wins the Super 6, Pavlik has a couple more warm ups, does anyone seriously think it'll be enough? Ring rust or not, he will get destroyed by Froch and any other elite 168lber.

I hate to say it, as I am a Pavlik fan, but I don't think he has a bright future.

A little while ago I watched Pavlik/Lopez for a second time. This time I made a few changes in perspective, and viewing style.

1: I acknowledged Lopez as a solid "gatekeeper" type opponent because I think that is where he needs to be rated. For Example, I think Vera/Lopez would be a sweet main event on FNF.

2: I shed the predictions and expectations of a quick KO that so many posters related before the fight. (I was never sure that was realistic.)

3: I turned the sound off so I did not have to listen to Bernstien deliver KP's eulogy while Tarver and company announced Lopez's arrival as the next big thing at 168. (I usually like the Showtime crew, but Saturday night they reminded me of Wally Matthews' ******ed little sister.)

Under those circumstances I found it difficult to find even one round that Lopez won clearly. For example, the punch track numbers were absurd. I seriously doubt if Lopez connected more than 20%.

On at least 3 occassions Lopez was probably 1 or 2 flush shots away from a nice nap in a crowded arena. That was an area where the ring rust showed up. A little sharper version of KP would have followed up better and put Alfonso to sleep in the 6th or 7th round.

Lopez spent an awful lot of time flailing away hitting air and gloves. Kelly stepped out of character for much of the fight and fought a deliberate, controled fight with very little wasted energy.

Like I said, I found it difficult to give Lopez even one round. Any score card that gave him more than three rounds should be disregarded.

Kelly did not put in the kind of stellar performance some of us hoped he would. However, he did beat an undefeated light heavyweight who proved to be a much better fighter than most expected.

i can't be sure if they prepared for the fact that kelly would be throwing his left a lot or whether that was an in fight adjustment. either way, its clear that his counter left hook is good enough to stun and hurt a lhw. i want to see that right hand coming right behind it in his next fight. the fact that he wasnt throwing it i can attribute to ring rust and just not having his timing down to let that right natrually come behind a counter left hook. boo, you mentioned the guys calling the fight, even they were impressed w/ kelly's left but also noted that he wasnt throwing anything behind it.

i also want to see kelly in a little better throwing position. there were plenty of times where lopez would stop moving or would find himself either on the ropes or in a position to be walked to the ropes and kelly wasnt in position to capitalize and let his hands go. i can again attribute this to inactivity and just not being dialed in.

everyone needs to just calm down and see if kelly continues to improve on these things b/c he clearly was as the fight progressed.

I just saw the fight 20 minutes ago. It doesnt really answer any questions of where Pavlik is right now since he fought a competitive fight with a practically unknown fighter. Atleast he shaken a lot of the rust from his inactivity. Pavlik should'nt go into a contender type of fight next but maybe another Lopez type of fighter @168, Pavlik should stay clear away from 175.

Pavlik did ok the other night, his timeing was out abit but that will come in a few more fights.... To be honest he needed a 12 rounder he needs to work on his fitness and get some quality sparing in, one thinks.
Im on board the Pavlik express.....

I would give the performance 6/10.

The problem with Pavlik wasn't the jump in competition as he looked bad against Espino. The problem is he's lost a tonne of speed and despite not having to deplete himself I didn't see an improvement in that area. The elite of 168 easily handle Pavlik which is hard for me to say as I really like the kid.

It's been mentioned by another poster and I have to agree the last time I seen Pavlik with power & speed was against Lockett. Since then he seems to have lead in he's boots and looks lethargic.

The biggest concern I saw was that when Pav would back Lopez into a corner with his jab he would not unload the straight right AT all and Lopez would escape. The amount of times he had in him in corners I know that a Pav from 2 1/2 years ago would have went in for the kill and tried to close the show early. Other than that normal ring rust was very evident.

I also couldnt help but laugh, mostly because of ESB, at the end of the 2nd round when the first thing I heard was "come on kelly we gotta double an triple that jab":boxx

I want to see him back in the ring asap. He can build off that fight. He may not have looked perfect, but he did win, he did show his reflexes are still fine, he picked off a lot of shots with the gloves and so on. I don't know what else we could have asked for? But I do believe he needs to get back in the ring late July or August. A fight with Pryor or even Andrade would be a very good next step. I don't think they should rush him into a fight with Bute or any other top guy just yet. Let him get his feet back under him and get used to the new division and size. To me he didn't look great at the weigh in, he needs more time to get physically ready for that division. For Pavlik, I think the night was successful, he came back and he won, now keep that rolling and fight again asap.
