OK, he brutalised the unbeaten powerhouse Jeff Lacy & he beat an ATG in Hopkins albeit in a close/contraversial fight... both were remarkable victories but the fight were Joe Calzaghe finally proved to me & anyone with half a brain that he was truly a special fighter was vs Mikel Kessler, a big, strong, textbook, durable boxer that MOST here on ESB & indeed many parts of the world predicted would`expose`or at least prove too much for Calzaghe.

During this fight, just watch as Joe constantly has an answer stylewise to the severe problems put his way by a potentially great SMWT fighter.

The Lacy fight showed Joe`s relentlesness & drive to prove himself as an underdog after yrs of missed opportunities... the Hopkins fight shows his ability to fight out of his comfort zone vs a true (& I mean that) ATG in a past prime but still mighty capable Hopkins using grit & plenty of boxing savvy to pull thru.

The Kessler fight showed everything about Joe that night, for me it was his most complete performance as he was just brilliant in a true test of skills & character he won vs a guy that I believe will dominate 168 in yrs to come.

Calzaghe v Kessler is thee fight that both critics & fans alike should watch when judging Britains best ever filmed fighter.

    :thumbsup

It was a good win...that I expected to be quite honest.

It sorta remains to be seen how big that win really was because Kessler hasnt bounced back against any real opponants yet. But I imagine it will go down as one of his best wins no matter what Mikkel does.

Even before the Hopkins fight the Kessler fight is where alot of people found overwhelming evidence of certain technical flaws, holes, and gaps, in the skillset of Calzaghe. Kessler wasn't the right man to collapse on those sort of mistakes, because he let dozens of openings close and slip away - but in a P4P matchup with someone like Floyd Mayweather or an all-time matchup with someone Roberto Duran; Calzaghe would have been punished severely for all the mistakes that he makes. Not every boxing fan is tactically versed, nor tactically intelligent, but for the ones that are; Calzaghe is not an impressive boxer in the slightest, and neither is the Kessler performance. The Kessler performance is an indictment on Calzaghe as a talent, in and of itself. But Calzaghe is a very good fighter, and a tremendous competitor.

I still think both Lewis and Buchanan that I have seen on film were better. I'm sure film could be dug up of Ted Kid Lewis and/or Jimmy Wilde and/or Bob Fitzsimmons who were all clearly better, but I definitely agree that Kessler was an excellent performance by Joe, one of the top 10-15 performances so far this century. By the mid-rounds I thought Kessler was going to take control, but Joe showed he has another level to go to that the merely good fighters do not. He really was sensational that night.

And who is Kessler ? Or Lacy ?

.....ATG in a past prime but still mighty capable Hopkins using grit & plenty of boxing savvy to pull thru.....

    Hopkins is older man.

I thought he had enough proof when he brutalized lacy...lacy was a beast at the time and he ruined him..put on an absolute clinic...it was quite bvius he had special talent

It doesn't remains to be seen how great the win was. Kessler has already proven he is a world class boxer, as anyone with eyes in their heads can see - regardless of resume. Resumes don't tell the whole story - watching fights does.

World class yes...very good or even good in a historical sense no.

Kessler looks excellent against average and mediocre opposition, so he should. But against a p4p fighter he showed he was a bit of one trick pony, unable to adapt.
There are plenty of fights out there for him to showcase how he would go against elite fighters, his last one and up coming one arent those fights. So we will see.

I have to agree. I don't subscribe to that idea at all. Resume is the most important thing to think of when judging fighters IMO. Literally anyone can look good against an inferior opponent (I'm not talking about Calzaghe-Kessler here obviously, speaking theoretically about the highlighted statement)

One thing for sure is that Kessler's legacy or lack thereof will have a great effect on Calzaghe's lagacy in the long run.

Exactly..If Kessler goes on the become the man at 168 in the future, taking care of guys like Taylor, Bute, Inkin, Froch et al. Then that will of course reflect better on Joe then if he fades into oblivion.

Do you judge Calzaghe any differently than you did 1 week ago?
