--- Wladimir had a brilliant performance against Chagaev, but he's in his 30s and starting to leave his prime. He was a better fighter in 2006-2007. He has almost had 60 fights and they are leaving a scar. Vitali still has a granite chin and throws a lot of punches, but you can notice his decline...He is not the same Vitali that we saw in 2002-2004. The reasons are obvious: Age, injuries, inactivity. We are seeing Wladimir leave his prime, and a deteriorated version of Vitali.
Agreed, They are not the Klitschko's of several years ago, but they are still the best two heavyweights out there.
It doesn't matter if they are past their respective prime or not, these guys are motivated and are high caliber/first teir heavyweights. Old or young, i still think Wlad will continue dominating til hes in his late 30's, and Vitali probably has about 2 more fights left in him, but he is still in fantastic fighting shape despite being not in his prime physicality.
I think within 4 years both Klits will be out of the picture. Not sure who can fill the void, but I see at least one of them having a title for the next few yrs , or at least still in the top 5 mix.
They may be past prime (well, Vitali is for sure), but it does not matter that much. Their style bases mainly on utilizing the reach advantage, a little similar to that of Lennox Lewis.
by age Vitali should be past his prime but he moved as well as he did against Sanders last night. Wladimir has barely been hit in since peter. I think their conditioning year round also helps. if you said klitsckho was 28 and arreola was 38 I would have believed it judging by movement and quickness.
The Klits are great guys, always in excellent shape and always showing true class, their longevity reflects their discipline and respect for the sport. That's why they are still on top and good luck to them.
Vitali sure sounded like he's just about done last night talking to Merchant. I think he might have one more fight.. I think he'd love to KO Haye and retire. There's just not a lot of big name fights left... they could make huge money fighting Haye, Valuev, or Povetkin. Boystov (maybe) over in Germany.. actually all those fights would have to be in Germany to make money (other than Haye, it'd do good in the UK).
Agreed, Vitali in his prime is a H2H pick against any HW fighter out there. The combination of size, chin, and power - combined with decent handspeed and solid skills for a HW. I really don't pick anyone ever to have beaten him. Wlad, I still think he's in his prime, I think he's got another 3 years of it too. He's less nervous in the ring than ever, controls the action more and has perfected a style which maximises the amount he can land on his opponent without taking any. I think Vitali would spank Wlad, should they ever fight though.
Well, take Arreola - that represents a guy who fought his way to a mandatory shot and he was never in that fight, he got beaten up by a 38 yr old who has a dodgy knee and shoulder. I think they're out of viable contenders. Once Haye/Valuev has been cleaned up, the next level of boxers are probably 3-4 years away from viability.
