Paulfv, I think you make a lot of good points on this site. But I somewhat disagree with you on this subject. Before anyone else, it was Wladimir who dented Peter's confidence in their 2005 fight. Peter was never the same after that Wlad fight, even though he was the clear aggressor and put Wlad on the canvas 3 times. Let's be real about Peter: -His punching power is vastly overrated. Never KO'ed anyone worth note who didn't have a glass chin already. -He has very little boxing skill, especially when he fought Wlad in '05 as a green prospect. That's just putting it nicely. -He simply coasted by on hype (until Wlad beat him by UD in September of 2005). That said, Robert Helenius DESTROYED Peter. He did it in a way that was authoritative and emphatic. He took it right to Peter and knocked him the **** out. Neither brother handled him that way; not even Wlad's recent stoppage over him was comparable imo. Helenius deserves his full credit for doing what a completely assertive heavyweight would have done a long time ago. Though Peter never was that good, Helenius really did prove something today. I've said before that this guy is for real. People need to stay tuned because this is a serious heavyweight contender here. The fight wasn't a masterclass domination, but Helenius hasn't even had 20 fights yet. Peter's scalp has been taken at this early stage of his career, so Helenius is on to find out who's next.
Did Tyson lose to Holmes? Did Marciano lose to Louis? Did Holyfield lose to Foreman? Did Holmes lose to Ali? Did Lewis lose to Tyson? Lewis was old and on his way out, he showed up at a career high in weight, and guess what vitali still couldn't get the job done even against a washed up fighter, he lost fair and square.
Thanks, man! :good I agree with just about everything you said here, and particularly the highlighted material. Peter was always limited. Best thing for him was his chin, and he did/does have good power if he can land on you. I know people like 40 Ounce are mad for what I wrote. I have no problem with Sam Peter. It's the blind Peter fans -- and particularly the Klitschko Haters who used Peter as their "savior" -- who annoyed me. Things didn't quite go as they hoped. I wanted to reiterate that point. Helenius seems very legit. That makes me happy as a boxing fan. I still want to see how his chin and stamina are. Hopefully, if he has hand problems, that can be managed. But he has some real skills. It's good to see a true prospect out there. Excellent post. Take care! :thumbsup
Sam was not the same after the first Wlad fight.... before the fight he was unbeaten, unstoppable and his confidence was untouchable..... then he got beat and wasnt the same... then his confidence was climbing and Vitali crushed him.... in the last fight with Wlad, you could just tell all fight week that sam has absolutely ZERO confidence....... Dont think Sam will ever be back, which is to bad.... hell of a nice guy
:happyhappy Could not have said it any better myself. There are so many people who actually buy the "superior athlete" hype about races or groups of people. Sad. I'm not saying there are no differences, but people seem to want to make more out of things than what probably actually exists. What tends to bring out the best athletes, in any group, is need. As in, I need to eat. I need money. Fedor Emelianenko, widely considered the best MMA fighter of all time, fought because he was poor. Fighters of Jewish heritage used to dominate a good portion of boxing in the USA. Why? Because they didn't have very good options outside of sports. That changed. Now there is no particular talent pool of Jewish fighters in the sport. They don't need it anymore. The fighters from the former Soviet countries, they're hungry. They had it tough, much tougher than most Americans can relate to. No Section 8, no food stamps, no nothing. They're excelling in sports like boxing because they have to, they need to. A good way to see this kind of disparity is when you see a fit Klitschko come in against a flabby American heavyweight. Just a different mindset. And for those who don't know, I'm an American.
1000% agree with all of this. Much of the "unraveling," if you will, of Peter was directly due to the Klitschkos. There's really no way around that. Even if Peter wasn't as good as advertised -- and I don't think he was -- the Klitschkos still made the point clear for those who didn't see it at first. And there were many who didn't see it or who didn't want to see it. Great post, Chef! :good
Hope you, your wife and the K Bros are doing well. :thumbsup I have nothing against Peter. He seems like a really good guy. Not big on his manager (nor is/was Vitali -- LOL!) or the people who wanted to use him as a proxy against the Klitschkos, though. I do like Helenius, though. I don't think he's ready for either of the Bros, but he has some talent.
if Helenius stays on track and they watch him and dont throw him to the klitschkos, i think big things could be in his future...... Right now... both brothers would derail him BIG...... What a KO that was ..WOW...Good night SAM
