I recently started training with the match guys and sparring them is a nice change but im slowly losing my motivation. I'm a guy that loves to compete, thats why i loved football, a match every week. Thing is, the boxing scene is completely death in the netherlands unlike the kickboxing scene which we dominate. Even the best fighters at our gym only fight like once every 4 months, the best guy has a contract in germany and can live off boxing but for the rest its pretty much dead Im seriously considering switching to kickboxing or muay thai, those guys fight a lot more and actually get paid (still not nearly enough to live off but still nice) Anyone here have any experience transitioning to kickboxing? I know that some things in boxing are pure suicide in kickboxing
exact opposite situation where I'm at: much easier to score boxing bouts than muay thai. I train muay thai, so I'm kind of having the same problem as you. been training for a late august event since january. it's messing with my head. when bouts do come up, they're a big deal and almost always out of state (closest is a 7hr drive). no easy way to build up a lot of experience. As far as transitioning, there's something my old coach used to say all the time: "It's easier to teach a puncher to kick than it is to teach a kicker to punch" Very hard to teach people who kick how to sit on their punches. Much easier to teach a good boxer how to transition their balance to deliver & defend kicks. Will take some time though, just don't get frustrated. Dutch style muay thai will make the transition even easier than traditional Thai muay thai; as it's much more focused (typically) on hand combinations. I'm thinking of going back to boxing after this August event.
I've done the reverse - transitioned from kickboxing to boxing. It's much harder than it seems. The whole dynamic of range and movement is different. I did both simultaneously for a while. Good habits in one, become bad habits in another. It takes a little getting used to. Some people may find it easy to switch, but it's never quite as easy as most people would expect. Having said that, don't let it discourage you. Many people make the transition successfully or do both. I'm just saying some of the skills transfer easily, and others take a little more time,.
