Larry Merchant is a legend a hilarious, I don't understand the hate. I think one dip**** said something and now there is this whole 'hate merchant' bandwagon that is fashionable nowadays. Well **** THAT!!! Larry Always was is and will be a stud! A legend among boxing commentators. I'll miss him when hes gone. He has provided 30 years of entertainment.
I can't remember the words exactly but after Hopkins beat De La Hoya I think he said something like, "What do you call that Bernard? Chopped Liver?"

Damn how old is Larry now? We used to make fun of him being drunk and over the hill like 20 years ago. The one quote that sitcks with me was serious and prophetic. I forget exactly which fight it was but Tyson had just blasted somone, may have been Spinks. Larry in all seriuosness says, " The only man who who can beat Mike Tyson is Mike Tyson." Made me think, yeah the crazy old dude is right. He hit the head of the nail with that one.
After Lennox Lewis was knocked out by Rahman in the first fight Larry said, " We just saw Lennox Lewis drowned in Oceans 11".:rofl Lennox had an extra part in that movie, together with Wlad.
PBF v. Baldomir: “The thorough bred against a clamor, or rather the Porsche vs. the pickup truck.” Mayorga v. ODLH: lampley: "will the seething undercurrent of the buildup now be reflected in what we see in the ring?" merchant: "probably. sure. because mayorga is a rude, crude dude in the ring as well as outside. in a sense, what we have here is class warfare with boxing gloves....mayorga looks at him as a hated slumlord, and oscar is coming to collect the rent" This is one of my fav's: -After Jim Lampley discussed tongue-in-cheek how HBO wanted to show all the sights and sounds of a title fight Saturday night, which included a gratuitous shot of a ring girl holding a number nine sign to signal the ninth round, Larry Merchant said "I thought it meant she was nine." To which Lampley replied, "That's a matter of opinion, Larry."
