He was on the verge of being knocked out when the police stopped it.

What's so hard to understand about that?

I think that Burns was about to be knocked out, but can we realy hold it against a man his size being stopped by an ATG heavyweight.

The Pelkey fight is one that particularly persuades me of Burns's durability. Pelkey was a renowned puncher of over 200lbs, in his prime, and a declining Burns slugged it out with him giving as good as he got.

What about Burns vs Fitzsimmons? He was probably every bit as good as him yet Fitzsimmons is portrayed as a H2H monster.

Fitz would probably have been favoured over Burns by many, if they had fought when Burns was the champion!

If contemporary opinion counts for anything, then Fitz is on a different level.

Basicaly, Burns needed a weak point in the division to become champion in any era, and Fitz didn't.

So Spinks can stop a huge man like Cooney, but not a 5'7 midget? :huh

Ok i'm 5'6... but seriously 5'7 is a midget at Lightheavy, let alone at Cruiser or Heavy.

    :think

He was the champ three years. How could someone not accept that?

This thread would've been better if it were, "Who was the last LHW champ Tommy Burns could beat"?

I hold nothing against Burns, I just took exception to poster Dempsey stating Johnson could not ko Burns, because it is patently ridiculous, when Johnson got down to business he quickly had Burns on ***** street.Burns was saved by the bell in the 13th rd, and on the floor 4 times before the police stepped in.
I'm a fan of Little Tommy's , but lets be real here.
Burns was dropped in fights, his chin was nothing exceptional.

    Pelkey a renowned puncher?

Really ,who of any class did he stop?

    PLEEEEEZE don't say McCarty.:nono
