Some people say, "he only lost to great fighters like Ali x2, Frazier x2, and Norton" He also lost to Machen, Ellis, Chuvalo, etc. He also drew with some pretty shltty fighters.

He didn't just lose to Ali x2, Frazier x2, and Norton... he was totally dominated and stopped (x5) vs. these guys... he never made it past the 8th round in any of these 5 fights even though plenty of other fighters did.

Why not talk up Bert Cooper?... who really was kinda shltty overall despite a few good moments in his career. Cooper stopped Orlin Norris who was a CW Champ, beat Tony Tucker, and fought a NC with Mike Tyson. Cooper also dropped Holyfield and Moorer x2 before being stopped by them.

Who the hell did Quarry beat? Shavers? So what?

Lyle? Good win but Lyle got a lot better after his fight with Quarry.

    Who else did he beat?

This is all kinda bull****. Obviously, given a drugged-up Quarry with a broken back a'la versus Norton, a lot of guys can beat him.

However, if you phrase the question wherein both fighters are prime and in good health, Jeremy Williams, Bert Cooper and Henry Cooper, among many others listed here, are not going to win.

Good post, Quarry was a good boxer, but plenty could beat him, especially against men he'd have stylistic issues against

We remember Quarry today because he's so enjoyable to watch. He looks like the sort of heavyweight that we like to believe existed in the 60's-70's "golden age"-- small, yes, but also durable, fast handed, mobile, hard-hitting, competent at multiple ranges, and more "skilled"-looking than his 2000's successors. He moves like a lighter weight fighter.

Quarry had a photogenic style, and he looked great when he was "on". Compare him to somebody like Vitali lurching all over the ring, or even a clubber like Shavers. Quarry might not have always been effective, but his style looked right.

edit : d below was my post after i forgot that i already posted in this thread and this time bothered less .

Oliver McCall (but only if he is in 1 of d Maskaev/Lewis moods) , Orlin Norris , Corrie Sanders , Carl Williams , Jeremy Williams (50-50 in this case) .
It would have been interesting if Quarry & Stander could both b rejuvenated and put inside d ring .
Chris Byrd under refereeing like he had vs Tua would have probably outpointed him as well .

    Top 25? Really?

Mac Foster proved to be not very good, Lyle was pre-prime (prime vs. prime I'll take Lyle in a close fight), and Shavers was very limited but he did have plenty of power. Yes, Quarry was not at his best vs. Norton but I really don't think it would have mattered much if he was.

I can't rate him above Lyle despite the win over him. Lyle was much more competitive vs. Ali than Quarry was in 2 fights. They had several common opponents... which isn't always a good indicator of anything... but they both fought-

    Ali:

    Quarry- LKOby3 and LKOby7
Lyle- LKOby11- Lyle was ahead on the scorecards at the time of the stoppage and many felt the stoppage was early

    Ellis:

Quarry- L15... for the vacant WBA HW Title, pretty close fight
    Lyle- W12

    Shavers:

    Quarry- KO1
    Lyle- KO6

    Mathis:

    Quarry- W12
    Lyle- KO2

    Middleton-

    Quarry- W10
    Lyle- KO3 and W10

Quarry fought Frazier twice, LKOby7 and LKOby5

Lyle fought Foreman, LKOby5... he knocked Foreman down twice

    Anyway, I don't see Quarry at 25

Just brainstorming, not really in any order, but 30 guys I think that are better at HW-

Ali, Holmes, Holyfield, Foreman, Louis, Marciano, Frazier, Tyson, Lewis, Bowe, V. Klitschko, W. Klitschko, Charles, Walcott, Patterson, Johnson, Tunney, Dempsey, Schmeling, Braddock, Witherspoon, Folley, Machen, Moorer, Byrd, Moore, Ibeabuchi, Tua, Mercer, McCall, Ruddock, and plenty others.

Had Quarry done better vs. Ali or Frazier maybe I'd feel differently. Getting stopped by Chuvalo was bad (yes, I've seen it). He couldn't get it done vs. non-great HW titlist Ellis. IMO, he lost twice to a faded Patterson. Hell, I'll even give him a free pass for getting easily outboxed by old vet Machen on his way up the rankings. This is not the resume of a top 25 HW.

He didnt lose to Patterson. first one was a draw (Patterson down twice, Quarry one). Second fight he won (Patterson down twice again). I have Quarry`s fight worn gloves from the second fight :yep

I think the use of that particular scoring system is why most people think Patterson should have won. Either way, Quarry did very little to win the rounds aside from the ones he scored knockdowns in and was lucky to escape without a loss in both fights.

Every1 who dismisses d truth should remember that he stopped both Bert Cooper & Jesse Ferguson and never lost 2 Holmes despite having a fight against him .

I wrote "IMO"... that means "in my opinion" I know that he got a draw and a win vs. Patterson.
