You know what an argument can be made for Muhammad Ali - great career, poor skills RELATIVELY speaking out of all the greats. If you made Ali smaller we wouldn’t have heard about him at 147lbs “best HW” maybe (Louis IMO) but compare his skills to Napoles.
I’d say McGovern from what I’ve seen on film, but there have also been news reports of McGovern occasionally surprising the crowd by outboxing good boxers so who knows.
Interestingly, how Marciano could be in a discussion even as he beat few opponents who had all-time great skillset
What are you on about? You could make a case Marciano beat three of the most intelligent fighters to ever be considered HW’s Moore and Charles for a certainty.
Azumah Nelson??? Ricky Burns has to be up there too, yes the competition was weak, but he was still a 3 weight world champion and he can’t help what competition is around, he can only win the titles and that’s what he did, yes he had fortune on his side, but again, that’s not his fault, and should be an ATG because he’s a 3 weight world champion.
No he should not be an ATG for being a 3 weight world champion hes not even remotely close to being an ATG. ATG's don't lose one sided decisions to Carl Johansson, Alex Arthur. And have their jaw broken and get beaten up by Ray Beltran. He was certainly an over achiever and made the most of his opportunities for example...... Burns beat Michael Katsidis and then was made Lightweight champion after Juan Manuel Marquez moved up in weight and vacated. He also won a vacant belt vs Michele Di Rocco at Jr Welterweight who was European level and not world class. Burns did have a very solid win vs Roman Martinez for Super Featherweight title which is probably the best win of his career. But overall Burns did improve a bit as a fighter and carved out a solid career in which he over achieved but to suggest hes an ATG is ludicrous to be quite honest no offense.
Oh boy I can say that will get me a lot of flame but I'm ready for this; Ali, most of his success came from his athleticism, toughness and size and when his athleticism started to decline his lack of boxing fundamentals began to show and he relied more and more on his toughness to win fights. Now I do think he was skilled (for a heavyweight) but his overall skills are highly overrated imo and there are boxers who had worse careers who I would say were more skilled then him.
