Pivoting gives better defence, plus turning the shot gives a little place, called the Hole, which the chin fits nicely into.

To me it feels like if you don't pivot it would be difficult to get all your weight into the shot, since the leg & foot won't be contributing much. If the rest of your body is flinging itself with full force from left to right, but the foot is just staying there pointing straight, it seems like it would get in the way of the weight transfer. Whereas with pivoting its a more fluid movement involving the whole body carrying its weight from left to right.

Pretty sure it was a rhetorical question meant to illustrate something. Even if something is definitely correct, it's always better to work out why it's right rather than just do it mindlessly.

Besides, there are no such things as stupid questions, only stupid answers!

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but this question bugged me for a long time.
Apparently you all agree to pivot - how come that guys like Frazier, Tua and Tyson, three guys who are known for their left hooks, don't? Is it because they're short? I'm really curious.

I think being short they got more power from an "upwards motion" and the torso twist. They push up with the left instead of to the right.

Tua does. So does Tyson. Frazier is the hardest one to tell if he does or not but one thing is for certain, his transference of weight is from front to back, or left to right- whatever you prefer. The way they shot fights in the 'olden' days meant you don't see many full body footage of frazier. But Tyson and Tua most certainly do pivot. Why do you not think they did?

He goes up. No pivot visible as the feet aren't showing but I doubt he does. It's more of an upward surge, as Dempsey called it.

    @ RDJ: That sounds reasonable.

@ Brown Bomber: I mentioned Tyson/Tua because of video footage that made me think they didn't pivot. Frazier (and Hopkins for that matter) said themselves that they don't pivot. I think I even read their quotes in a thread in this very forum.

Berserker, if the knee and foot dont move, niether can the Hip. Interestingly if the hook goes past your right shoulder, youre of balance and cant generate power. Also the hook on landing for maximum effect, the elbow should be in line with the knee on impact.

    Thanks for the answer.
I can move my hip just fine without pivoting, though. I just have to adjust my rear leg/foot a bit. Frazier does it like that, for example. I'm not sure what you mean with the rest, can't visualize how the hook can get past my right shoulder, or how it can line up with my knee.

Somethings moving below the Hip , it cant move otherwise. What moves the left soulder is, the right shoulder if the right doesnt move the left one cant. Go against a wall sideways and put the right shoulder against it and your left hand, in a hook position. Then move of the wall a foot in the same position, now try generating power from that position, you cant. Oh put the hand on the wall in line with the shoulder. :good
