What are your thoughts on this subject? Is it a strong legacy? Or a weak legacy? Does he even have a legacy?
I think he certainly has a legacy, if only among hardcore boxing fans. I think his legacy is that of one of the best pure technicians of his time, he beat a handful of pretty good fighters like roberto garcia, nate campbell, diego corrales and michael katsidis and lost a few disputable, razor thin decisions to guys like freitas and castillo. Overall not enough to be considered an atg, but he might merit hof-consideration someday. Oh and ofcourse he'll also be remembered as one of the sneakiest dirty fighters there ever was, and i mean that as half a point of criticism and half a compliment.
I will remember him as a guy that was very good but fell short in his biggest tests. I don't thinkanyone other than hardcore boxing fans will remember him though.
You might be right about that last part. I think he does have a legacy. For a start, his amateur career was incredible. He started his pro career fairly late on, and in that short period of time he's won 3 world titles, and one linear championship. He also beat Corrales twice, Garcia, Nate Campbell, an unbeaten Katsidis, a few others fighters of note, and probably should have got the decision against JLC and Freitas as well.
Strong lecacy IMO who cares what casual fans think ? No way this guy isnt in the HOF one day. Had a incredible amateur career that resulted in a Gold Medal and his Pro career was just as good. 2 wins over the great Diego Corrales, World Champion and legitmate Champ at 130 and 135. He didnt lose his first fight clearly until age 37. If this guy had good luck in decisions he couldve had 3 wins over Corrales and wins over Freitas and Castillo. Throw in sure wins like Nate Campbell,Michael Katsidis, and Roberto Garcia he had a wonderful career.
He has a decent legacy maybe a little bit lower than somebody like Winky, and has similarities in the sense that alot of his achievements are only known by the hardcore fan. None of my friends would really know about any of his or Winky's achievements.
HOF standard. If the top tier of this era has been guys like Jones Jr, Hopkins, Mayweather, Pacquiao, Barrera, Morales, De La Hoya, Mosley, etc etc, then I think Casamayor belongs in the second tier alongside guys like Castillo, Vasquez, Tszyu, Winky Wright, Calzaghe, and Johnny Tapia. A very very good fighter, but not quite one of the best of the era.
I have only started watching some Casamayor in the last few days and he is a great fighter. People will remember JLC and Corrales for a long time and I'm sure the hardcore one's will instantly remember Casa as well. I was going to order a casa career set a few weeks back but I think he still has a few good fights in him left.
Casa is a great fighter to watch, and he's been involved in some really great fights through the years. He's a really skilled boxer/counter puncher who loves to antagonize his opponents and isn't afraid to get into a brawl. I'd be interested to hear what you thoughts are on the Castillo/Freitas decisions. I've always felt that if he got the nod in those fights he would have got the recognition his talent deserves. That said, he does have those signature wins against Corrales & Katsidis, as well as a few others of note. He's a wily old fox as well, he was getting battered by Katsidis at one point, so Casa just smacked him in the nuts
Casa was just born in the wrong time period. If he was hitting his prime now, He'd be top 5 P4P. The guy was a defensive wizard in his day and was a throwback to the "anything goes" boxers from yesteryear. I'm not sure if Casa is a HOFer but he has his place in boxing. I'm not sure if Casa will be remembered but I think as the Cuban fight explosion continues (with Lara, Rigondeux and Gamboa to name a few), Casamayor will get the HBO re-write as "The first major fighter from Cuba".
