His record and the endorsement of Eddie Futch and Archie Moore count for alot, the film we have isn't impressive showing at least in that fight a one punch at a time fighter with good balance and timing, little in the way of combinations or explosiveness. He owned Moore but Charles owned him so,,,,,
I think he looks fantastic. In the little we have he mixes caution with opportunism and looks like a brilliantly put together package.
He appears to me, and from all I've read about him, to be a cerebral, deliberate chess player with heavy hands. I like all that and like JT just said he is indeed a "brilliantly put together package"....I just wish that there was more footage of him.
The Los Angeles Times (Los Angeles, California) 22 Apr 1944, Sat Page 6 Burley Whips Moore Handily in Legion Ring Winning every round of 10, Charley Burley, California middleweight champion, easily defeated Archie Moore in a non-title bout before a packed house at Hollywood last. night. Hurley, who recently won the State title by knocking out. Jack Chase in nine rounds, had Moore on the deck four times in as many different rounds from powerful rights to the jaw. The counts ranged all the way from one to eight. At the finish Moore, a former State middleweight king himself, was in sorry condition. The entire left side of his face was puffed and swollen and a nasty looking shanty had been reared over his left eye. Moore on Floor Beginning with the first session, when he went down from a right cross for the count of four, Moore visited the canvas in each of rounds three, four and eight. In the latter heat he ran into a left jab and was down for his shortest count. Burley stopped Moore's feared left hook and was never in danger. Moore weighed 161 so Burley's title was not at stake. Burley came in at 155. The result thoroughly squelched gambling rumors that the fight was in the bag for Moore.
Would have been great to have seen up against Zivic, Conn, Robinson, Lamotta... all guys he desperately tried to get in the ring.
I have been trying to find the gate receipts of each boxing show that Charley Burley fought on during his career. So far, I have found a number of such gate receipt figures, which have generally been low for a fighter of Burley's caliber. They present strong evidence why Burley didn't get a world title shot or had trouble getting bouts with certain top gate attractions. - Chuck Johnston
Ah... ...ok. The fact that Burley never received a title shot, whoever it could have been against, does seem to leave a big question mark. One can only wonder.
