The top 10 heavyweights has been done to death, but who are the 10 best light heavyweights.

Tunney, Charles and Spinks seems to be a close to consensus top 3 but who else should be in the list.

Moore seems highly rated by most although he never went on to win a heavyweight title. What about Fitzsimmons, Moorer, Braddock, Jones Jr and Burns do their heavyweight deeds entitle them to spot.

And what about others who never quite won the heavy title. Moore, Greb, Langford, Choynski, Foster. Without even trying, there are 12 fighters who could all lame a claim as one of the top 10 the greatest light heavys ever. And i am certain that i will have forgotton to list many all time great light heavys.

Incidentally, How does the true light heavyweight lineage really look and why is it that fighters do not seem to have been able to dominate the division in the same way that heavyweight Champions dominated?

    1. Ezzard Charles
    2. Archie Moore
    3. Michael Spinks
    4. Tommy Loughran
    5. Gene Tunney
    6. Harold Johnson
    7. Bob Foster
    8. Harry Greb
    9. Billy Conn
    10. John Henry Lewis

Charles at #1, I think that is clear. Minor changes elsewhere seems reasonable though.

Greb is difficult for me to rank at LHW, and I don't even bother trying to rank Langford by divisions.

Maybe Langford beats anyone at 175lbs?
The usual suspects must feature, something like?
    Tunney ]
    Charles]interchangeable?
    Langford
    Moore
    Foster
    Loughran
    Conn
    Spinks
    Dillon
    Johnson
And where to put Greb? Jones Jnr? Choynsky?
Lewis,Delaney,Berlenbach ? Its a pretty rich division ,for one that hasn't allways been that popular. Tommy Burns could legally have claimed this crown , he would be a tough LH imo.

T Booze what is your reasoning for having Charles at 9 and Conn at 21? Also no Greb, Norfolk, Tiger Jack Fox, Bivins or Dillion. Good to see Rosenbloom get a mention I was thinking about placing him in my top 20 but I guess he just missed out.

I digged out an old (poorish) list (2004)!!! Carpentier would not be so high, and I would find places for Greb (in the top 10) and Norfolk (top 30).

Looking at it, I would actually would have Slapsie Maxie higher; Conn 21???.

    I would re-write it as:

    10 Ezzard Charles
    9 Sammy Langford
    8 Billy Conn
    7 Bob Foster
    6 Harry Greb
    5 Gene Tunney
    4 Maxie Rosenbloom
    3 Michael Spinks
    2 Tommy Loughran
    1 Archie Moore

Charles never made 175 again after 1948; he was a Middleweight until 1942. So you have to IMO only to look at them six years.

Charles was sensational at the weight during that period only losing to Bivens (avenged); Marshall (avenged) and Ray (avenged); also he beat a Maxim; Oakland Billy Smith and of course Archie Moore.

But like Roy Jones Jr; Charles was not prepared to stay around and win the proper World Light Heavyweight Championship.

So although Charles has the making of nearly the finest resume the 175lbs have seen, I can not put him above career or long time Light Heavies like the Moore's, Loughran's, Rosenbloom's and Spinks'.

You gave logical reasons for your choices ,but O Brien at 19?
You do know that when Burns beat him both were inside the LH limit?
Further more if you don't think Charles did enough at the weight [perfectly acceptable],OBrien ,never defended the title he took from an ancient Fitz, and was twice kod by Middleweight Ketchel.

I'm English so I like Mills but he was kod by Marshall ,but still got a shot at a fading Lesnevich , he made good in the return match ,only to be dominated by Maxim yet you have Mills two places above Maxim?
Michaczewski doesn't belong in the top 25,imo, putting him above Conn,Jones,Johnson,Lewis,Maxim ,to name a few ,isnt justified, imo. But Its your list.
