Lucian Bute
The super middleweight division was set alight recently when Joe Calzaghe, 41-0 (31), firmly established himself as the man to beat by pummeling Jeff Lacy, 21-1 (17), over twelve brutal and one sided rounds. Joining Joe at the top are fighters like Mikkel Kessler, Danny Green, Mario Veit, Markus Beyer and Jeff Lacy. One name never mentioned is that of Lucian Bute, 16-0 (15).

Lucian Bute is a young fighter, only 26, from Romania. The 6’2” southpaw has a style that combines bone crunching power and quick combination punching. If I had to think of any fighter that he reminds me of it would be current 168 pound champion, Joe Calzaghe. That is not to say he would beat Joe – he would not – but he is a terribly ignored young talent. He has power and speed, and fights out of Canada, so one has to ask why are we not seeing him on American television? Recently Bute has blasted out Donnel Wiggins six rounds quicker than Jeff Lacy, demolished rugged Kabary Salem stopping him in the eighth round, and recently shutout Andre Thysse with a dominating twelve round decision win.

Despite his bone crunching power, Bute is more than just a one punch at a time power puncher; he is a skilled combination puncher. Bute punishes his opponents, often driving them into the ropes and then unloading with well placed shots to the head and body. Lucian Bute has scored several stoppages with powerful gut busting body shots, something that many current fighters seem to forget to do. Bute has done his work recently, and has shown the skill, power and conditioning that fans appreciate; it is time that American networks give this young man some air time. It is time the American public gets to see what they are missing.
