It's an idea from Jean Bédard. I'm not sure that Gym people agree with it.
You don't want to be in front of Andrade when your stamina is not great. If I were Yvon Michel, I wouldn't take the risk before the rematch against Dawson. I'd take Cloud, Danny Green, whoever. Not Andrade.

So, Bute's next couple of years are to pan out like this: -

    Autumn 2010 - Brinkley
    Spring 2011 - Stieglitz/Sartison "unification"
Autumn 2011 - Mendy mandatory defence
Spring 2012 - one of the guys that didn't make it to the semis/final of the "Super" "Six"
Autumn 2012 - winner of the "Super" "Six"?

...jeeez... wake me up in autumn 2012...

I am sleeping for a while already, I don't like the road taken by Team Bute and I would like better competition and more fights, at least 3 times a year. Time flies and a career could end any day, so, why not milk the cow while it stands in front of you....:sad2

Bute should have dropped the IBF belt after defeating Andrade in the rematch.

At worst, he should have dropped it after Miranda.

Why did Bute not accept Cloud's offer?

Why did Bute not accept Pascal's offer?

There may not be more then 1 or 2 better fights out there than what is available to him, but he should try to make these fights, not least because anyone who matters at 168 lbs and 175 lbs is trying to make the best fights.

Boxing is a business, true. Bute may be thinking that holding on to that "0" gives him an aura with the fans that will help him make much more money overall. But, seriously, is he taking that big a risk fighting Pascal or Cloud? I don't think so...

...so, why is he not fighting them? Because he fears he cannot go back down to 168 lbs after heading north to 175lbs? I hope it's that, because there's no other explanation that is acceptable.

Yeah, OK, but becoming irrelevant for a couple of years in one of the most exciting divisions in boxing, where every other fighter who is somebody is making big fights... does that really make sense?

And what happens if he can no longer make weight at 168 in 2012 when he gets to fight the winner of the tournament, if he gets to fight the winner, that is...?

I guess the know what there doing ...at least i hope!

I understand that the bigger names are at 168lbs and it's not that easy to gain 7 pounds the right way ( no toney way) and to go back to 168lbs .

I don't understand why Bute has to put on muscle at all to be in top shape at 175lbs. Bute always says he is pretty much killing himself to dehydrate to 168lbs. Why not simply dehydrate less, having trained the same way, and make weight at 175lbs and then come into the ring on the night at 185-190?

    What's wrong with that?

And the next time, he dehydrates as much as before and hits 168lbs!

    What's the big mystery here???

    I don't get it...

It's not like Bute would be a small LHW without putting on more muscle. Also, it's not like he needs the extra bulk to beat someone like Pascal or Cloud. He needs speed and precision...

    ???

This is why I can't buy this whole: couldn't come down to 168 lbs again if I fought at 175lbs

I thought I understood Bute and where his career was going, but now I realise I don't, and I am not the only Bute fan to feel like this...

    ...disappointing.

I wrote this post almost three years ago...

...then, it expressed my hopes for Bute.

Does it still ring true? Many bits do, but some important bits don't, unfortunately...

I swear this thread is making my head hurt. Way too much nitpicking. Bute is the best guy at supermiddle or lightheavy and he is just now entering his prime. He also has the backing of the most powerfull boxing network (HBO).

I am simply going to sit back and enjoy his boxing as he rolls through challengers.

Let me put things into perspective:

    Bute's 30 and a half.

Bute's got 10 fights left in him before retirement, assuming he retires at 35, fighting twice a year.

By the time Bute has gone through e.g. Brinkley, Sartison, Mendy and Green, he'll be 32 and half.

He'd be fighting his first meaningful fight since Andrade II aged 33.

He'd have wasted probably the best 3 years of his career fighting not contenders, but failed, would-be contenders, guys who no one will ever remember in 20 years' time.

Then, there's only 5 more fights and Bute's history.

Is he supposed to fight his career defining fights aged 34 and 35?? Is he supposed to be at his very best then??

And all this is supposed to make me happy??

What makes you say that he'll go through Brinkley, Sartison, Mendy & Green before having meaningful fights ?

Bute is much closer to a meaningful one than you may imagine. After Brinkley, HBO won't stick around with team Bute if they fight nobodies. The time is now and if it ain't Jean Pascal at a catchweight, it'll be one of the eliminated Super 6 guys and Green is the least possible candidate, having already refused 2 fights for a shot at the title in the past.

I say by Spring of 2011, we'll see any of the following combinations :

    - Bute vs Pascal (a fight that will happen anyways some day).
    - Bute vs Dawson ( a fight that would get HBO interested and the winner goes against Pascal right after).
    - Bute vs Hopkins (given Hopkins somehow beats Jean Pascal if they fight).
    - Bute vs Dirrell or Froch (depending on who is out of the picture).

Doing anything else after Brinkley is suicidal marketing wise... People in Montreal aren't stupid and they wouldn't flock to see him anyways if he just milks that title with nobodies. INTERBOX are there for the money and the big money is with HBO !!!
