Three years ago Hamdan was dropped and lost every rounds against a 120 years old Otis grant coming of a 5 years lay off. He's hardly a killer.

The purse for the fight, according to Bute is at least 1,000,000 (not sure what currency, though)...he says 6 zeros...not bad, even if it's $US.

Bute superstitions:

1. No sex for the entire hard-core training period before the fight (4 weeks) :!:

2. Never shaves the day before the fight :smoke

3. Calls his mum back home before one day before the fight :good

4. Fights in the same underwear and socks he used in his first pro fight; never uses them for any other occasion. :rofl

5. Always walks out of the changing room before the fight right foot first.

...oh, yeah...he attends Church every Sunday too...

The other day on tv he said he had sex the night before an amateur fight. He said it was the worst fight of his life.

If it's 1 000 000 in Romanian currency that equals to ~400K Canadian Dollars. That's about what I thought he was gonna make.

Looking forward to tomorrow night. What time is Bute fighting? I loved the video of his training. Just goes to show what people love about him. Loves the sport, humble, ambitious without conceit. I've followed him for a long time now, and it's great to see him progress this far. Still, I believe this is only the beginning. He has to improve, sure, but he has all the qualities to achieve greatness.

An exciting winner over dangerous Alejandro Berrio in his last fight, Montreal’s Lucian Bute has what should be a far less arduous assignment on Friday night when he defends his IBF 168-pound title against veteran William Joppy.

The tall, Romanian-raised southpaw Bute is understandably a prohibitive favourite over Joppy, who is 37 and hasn’t boxed in world class since Jermain Taylor practically ran him out of the ring in Little Rock three years ago.

This fight seems to have been made for one reason — to give Bute a resounding win over an ex-champ “name” fighter.

At one time Joppy was a distinctly useful fighter, fast and with excellent hand speed. As a middleweight champion he was always overshadowed by Bernard Hopkins, who beat him badly in December 2003. Joppy has only been stopped once, though, when Felix Trinidad blasted through him in five rounds.

I was surprised to see Joppy continuing to box after the losses to Hopkins and Taylor, but he has been looking strong as a 168-pounder and he has stopped his last five opponents although the opposition has been extremely weak, including a 42-year-old former junior welter, Virgil McClendon, and a 35-year-old Etienne Whitaker, who had been stopped 10 times in his last 13 bouts.
It seems that Joppy was looking quite sharp in these appearances, but on Friday he is in a hugely different type of fight against a young, big, undefeated southpaw who will be boxing in front of a hometown crowd.

The first priority is, always, to get the win, but I think that Bute will be looking to give a special type of showing in his first fight as champion.

Joppy was evasive against Taylor, who had him down with a left uppercut in the fifth round but couldn’t really catch him cleanly again. I would think that Joppy will be using a lot of movement against Bute, trying to score points and get away and, if he finds himself getting hurt, simply slipping into survival mode, the way he did in Little Rock.

I think that Joppy might struggle to go the full 12 rounds on Friday, though. His legs are three years older than when he fought Taylor, for one thing. I think, too, that Bute might be able to do a better job of closing down the ring on him than Taylor managed. Although Bute is primarily a technician he seems to me to be more of an offensive-minded fighter than Taylor.

If Joppy wins it will be a colossal upset and I just cannot see it happening. The interest in this fight is what sort of job Bute can do on Joppy.

I have seen under/over propositions of 6.5 and 8.5 rounds for this fight, even though Bute has been the full 12 rounds in four of his last six fights. Joppy is very experienced, knows how to survive and, apart from the Trinidad fight, has never shown a lack of durability. If Joppy makes up his mind that he is going to see out the 12 rounds it could be difficult for Bute to dislodge him, and I will be very surprised if there is an early ending. I do think, though, that Bute can start to land the left hand from his southpaw stance with some consistency by the middle rounds, and if manages to slow Joppy down he can overpower him with a barrage of punches. If Joppy does make it to the final bell it will be a moral victory but I can see Bute closing the show — no earlier than the eighth, no later than the 10th round.

I agree with him. If Joppy decides to go into survival mode. It will be hard for Bute to stop him.
