Let the search continue! Tommy Walsh quit in 6 to Steve Dudas (Strange to see it come all the way around to him), who quit in 8 to Charley Massera, who quit in 10 to Al Ettore, who lost by TKO in 2 to Charley Retzlaff, who himself was KOed in 2 to Hank Hankinson, who lost a MD to Eddie Mader (Who beat out Galento himself in 6 before his next match), who quit in 8 to Al Ettore, who was KOed in 5 to Joe Louis, whereafter Louis held Galento's 0 for over 14 years before losing it to Ezzard Charles, who lost it in 7 by KO through Jersey Joe Walcott's beautiful walking uppercut, before losing by KO in the 14th to Rocky's own Suzie Q, who retired with Galento's 0! These men who we thought to be fighting for the quite silly world championship were really fighting for the true ultimate prize in heavyweight boxing this entire time, Galento's 0! I think that how much the lineage got passed around really just represents how constant the rough guys of this era were fighting- Every match could mean a loss if you weren't high class, and each man was only better because of it. Take a second just to admire these guys' records, whether they be Tony's own perfect 78-26-6, or Eddie Carr's 14-13-2, all these fights really meant something to these gentlemen, and they mean something to me, too. This lineage may have started over 96 years ago, and may have retired alongside Rocky, but it lives on in us today for remembering these fighters.
You'll find a lot of men's 0s ended up with Marciano simply because of the Louis-Charles-Walcott pipeline. He basically gets the 0s of everyone who lost to someone who lost to Louis. No surprise he also attained Goatlento's unbathed, unblemished 0
I do find this to be an interesting little experiment, though. I'd like to do it more, but I don't know whose I'd look for next.
Mesi is actually from my hometown. I went to school with his niece and actually dated her for a while.
Let's see how long the lineage of the first MW champ's 0 is. I'm talking of course about Nonpareil Jack Dempsey: Dempsey was first bested by the Australian Bill McCarthy, who KOed him in the 32nd round. McCarthy then fell to Fitz. Fitz loses to Tom Sharkey by DQ. Sharkey loses to Jeffries. Jeffries loses to Johnson in the original FOTC. Johnson then falls to Willard in the 26th. Willard gets steamrolled by Dempsey. Dempsey gets beaten by Tunney. Tunney retires with NP Dempsey's 0. Strange that Jack Dempsey had Jack Dempsey's 0 isn't it? The major flaw with this method though is fighters going out on top without losing before their retirement.
If Boxrec is correct, the lineal owner of Bernard Hopkins' 0 is, of all people, Joe Calzaghe. Hopkins loses in his debut to Clinton Mitchell in 1988. Mitchell has no listed fights for seven years. He finally loses to Robert Frederick in 1998. Frederick loses to Darren Whitley in his next fight. Whitley loses to Napoleon Tagoe. Tagoe loses to Ray Berry in March '99. Berry loses to Derrick Harmon in his next fight. Harmon gets a world title shot against Roy Jones in 2001 and loses. Jones loses to Antonio Tarver in their 2004 rematch. Tarver loses to Glen Johnson. Tarver wins a rematch with Johnson. Tarver loses to Hopkins, who in 2006 has finally taken his own 0 back. And then Hopkins loses to Calzaghe, who fights once afterward and then retires undefeated. The part I wonder about is whether Clinton Mitchell really didn't fight for seven years after beating Hopkins. Boxrec has that as each guy's debut, but I read an interview in which Hopkins claimed that Mitchell was 5-0 when they fought. There might be fights missing from Mitchell's record.
I'm sure I saw Tony's0 For sale in a car boot sale a few years ago.. I thought about buying it, but 75 £... Naaa
