So according to wiki it appears that Canelo is no longer the lineal champ at middleweight, if this is true and he has finally been stripped why did they wait this long? Canelo v Chavez was confirmed way back in January 13th, why didn't they strip canelo of the lineal title then? If they had done so in a timely manner then Golovkin would now rightfully be the lineal middleweight champion having beaten the number 2 middleweight in the division Danny Jacobs to take the vacant title. Just to emphasise how ridiculous the situation is, if Golovkin beats Canelo he will have beaten the number 2 middleweight, the number 3 middleweight and previous lineal champ and the number 4 middleweight in the rankings, but he still won't be lineal
The lineal title is very fluffy anyway. There are no rules for it per se and I put much more stock in actual belts.
The argument could easily be made and has been made that Canelo is still the lineal MW champ. He defended it against Khan the first weekend of May. His one year of inactivity in the division ended the same day he announces a fight with Golovkin, and it has been a month since Canelo announced he will be fighting full time at the 160 limit after the Chavez bout. But, most people thought that train of thinking was silly and have their thoughts on record. So those people will not be looking at the lineal champion in their mind when the winners' hand is raised.
