Asking anyone who has a vivid account of these fighters... The only ones I know are:

    Manny Pacquiao (2008-Present)
    Floyd Mayweather Jr. (2005-2008 )
    Bernard Hopkins (2004-2005)
Roy Jones Jr. (I don't know exact dates)

Who were before them? Please feel free to share, thanks...

No mate, the exact lineage is:

    Pac 2008-
    Floyd 05-08
    Hop 01-05
    Mosley 00-01
    Jones Jr 99-00
    Oscar 97-99
    Jones Jr 96-97
    Whitaker 93-95
    Chavez 90-93

Before that, it was Tyson, but I can't be bothered writing anymore. This is my contribution, and it's factually accurate.

But RJJ's first legit loss was in '04???

I know, but when Mosley beat Oscar, The Ring moved him up to number 1 because the opposition Roy was beating at the time was not really that good. I thought RJJ was still a far better fighter than Mosley too, but that was the rankings at the time. When Hopkins dominated Tito, he then overtook Mosley.

You are absolutely correct, but Bernard Hopkins ascended to #1 p4p based on his win over Tito Trinidad who was 40-0 3-division champion, #2 p4p at the time...

Oh wait, this wasn't a QUALITLY win by Bernard as some dumb ass poster alluded to earlier:patsch

Universally Recognized p4p champs...Hmm its not that many in fact only Jones and Mayweather have been UR(for not typing both long words everytime) p4p. Keep in mind that Toney Chavez and Whitaker bounced up and down from 1 to 3 for awhile, the same with Whitaker Oscar and Jones for awhile in the late 1990's Jones then back THE man for a while then it was between he and Shane, then it was Jones again then Hopkins Then Floyd who was THE MAN and UR. Now Pac isnt UR cuz many feel that Calzaghe is p4p. So really in the past 15 years only Jones and Floyd have been UR p4p kings...All others may have been listed as p4p but not UR.

Nonsense. As much as I love James Toney, he was never the p4p#1 at any stage, so you're wrong there. And to say Bernard Hopkins was not universally recognized as the pound-for-pound number 1 2001-2005 (ESPECIALLY 2004-5 after Jones had been beaten by Tarver) is ridiculous. Everyone who has been p4p#1 is at that time universally recognized. Of course every single person doesn't agree, but I don't recall a time when popular opinion was so widely and openly known to dispute The Ring's decision that their number 1 was said to not be universally recognized. And anyone who thinks Joe Calzaghe is right now p4p#1 ahead of Pacquiao and/or Marquez is defective.

Pac is the man. He may be the only Asian fighter and with the lightest weight to achieve p4p king status...

There was only one universally recognized #1 P4p fighter, the man they made the label for... Ray Robinson.
Anyone else to ever claim to be the best fighter P4p, there were disputes to that claim

    oscar
    jones
    whitaker
    chavez
    tyson
    curry
    leonard

just wondering was zoo ever a p4p #1 there was alot of speculation for wether he was or not.

it's very hard to determine who is the best fighter in the sport becuase your only as good as your last fight. and that can be only once or 2 times a year

calzaghe, floyd and pacman all have deserved claims and one over takes each other over the course of the year as pacfan was saying.

I am disputing some of your information. After Mosley lost to Forrest, i thought RJJ reclaimed the P4P spot in 2001. And only when he lost to Tarver in 2004 did Hopkins officially take the title as P4P best. But his loss to JT in 2005 gave the title to PBF.

And i had no idea DLH was a P4P king.

Robinson just made the term more popular.

Others before hand were called the best p4p, but the term wasn't as popular.

Fitz, Leonard(Benny), Armstrong, and Ross were all called pound for pound before Robinson was called pound for pound. The term was perhaps started with Fitz.

For all the crap we've been giving DLH for the Pac mismatch, the man truly deserves some credit. He has(as of Dec. 6) fought every #1 except for Jones:deal

I think Canzoneri was also called pound for pound the best also before Ray.
