It goes back too far to tell exactly. Everone had their own list, but if were going by RING Mag's annual poll, it started in 1980 and the list is:

No, he is right. Toney was ranked pfp the best. I don't know if it was after his win over McCallum or Littles. Maybe the ko of Prince Charles Williams at 168 too. Toney was jumped to #1 and he didn't deserve it just like Dlh never deserved to be ranked #1 over Jones...

 

Toney was never ranked #1, at least it is not recorded that he was. There were probably a few who put him over Whitaker at the time, like a few who had Pacquiao over Mayweather a year or two ago, but he was never the universally regarded P4P best.

Roy regained the number 1 spot after Mosely lost to Forrest. Even if it was the Ring who rated otherwise, the general consensus favoured Roy. He was the p4p no. 1 until he lost to Tarver. THEN Hops took over, and was no. 1 until he lost to JT in 05, where Mayweather took over.

Dela Hoya was another fighter who may have been rated no. 1 p4p by the Ring at some stage (after Whitaker), but I can't ever remember the general consensus being that he was the real no. 1. I always rated Roy over him at that time. IMO (and I think MOST people did too), Roy had started to take over Whitaker even before he lost to Dela Hoya. Whiatker was clearly aging, and simply not the best p4p in the world at that stage.

Ah, nice. I missed this. So the RING did have Roy as number 1 after Mosely lost to Forrest. Hopkins took over after Roy lost to Tarver, and Mayweather took over after Hopkins lost to Taylor... Now it seems Pac took over now that Floyd is retired.

Strange how a lot of the p4p no. 1's don't really WIN their way to the spot, but rather wait till the top spot loses or retires.

 

It is strange, everyone put Whitaker at #1 in '93 after the Chavez fight, but none of the others proved themself superior to the previous #1, except if you count the people who put Hopkins at #1 after he beat Trinidad who was #1 in 2000.

This is their annual poll to, so it's not necessarily their top choice. I believe I saw an issue of the ring from either '91 or '92 with Whitaker at #1 instead of Chavez, but the poll of 10 sources (including their own list) gave the edge to Chavez.

Also, to comment on your previous post, De La Hoya was raised to the #1 spot in '97 because before then the top 2 were Whitaker and Jones, then DLH beat Sweet Pea and Jones was DQ'd against Griffin, so DLH was at the top just for that brief moment.

 

No, I'm not talking about that guy. He isn't a fan imo, just a bandwagon fan. There are many who thought Dlh should've fought AM after the Cotto fight. I knew it wouldn't happen. Dlh's track record consists of big fights, and fights that get him ready for the guys he fights in big fights.

 

And if he had won all those fights, he would have my vote as the best of all time.:yep
