Weaker Mentally? When he quit because of a legitimate shoulder injury he was much older then Tyson was when Tyson got beat to a pulp by someone like Douglas or bullied around by Holyfield. Anyway, Liston was most likely in his late 30s when he had fought Ali both times, those losses are very suspicious anyways

The Liston-Clay and Ali-Liston fights should really be discounted off Sonny's resume.

    Too many behind-the-door, under-the-table dealings.

Do agree, Tyson's heart in several fights was unquestioned.

I think Liston was a better fighter slightly earlier in his career.

Head to head, I think he's amongst the very best heavweights. Top 5, I think.

You can't start tossing out losses because you're not 100% certain about what happened.

Having said that, i'm interested that someone who has researched these fights as much as you have is saying such a thing.

A census does apparently show A Charles Liston in that house the year he claims he was born. There is speculation that he took on a brother's name so he would appear younger, but that there is speculation.

I have a newspaper photo from a LuAnn Davis who said she knew Charles Liston when he was 7 years old.
She had a photo of him from 1935, where he looked to be 7 or 8.

Getting beat to pulp and bullied around doesnt necessarily make one mentally weak...

what im trying to get at is, if push came to shove between Tyson and Liston (In the ring) i see Liston backing down not Tyson.

Tysons problem was more frustration than 'giving up'

  8. liston would push tyson back, liston had too much reach for tyson, he would handle tyson with his jab, he might hurt tyson seriously even only with his jab.and he would finish tyson with a great right. a prime liston had better stamina than tyson, a pretty good chin to take the shots from tyson. if tucker or bruno did hurt tyson, liston would do it too for sure. and liston would finish him.

I disagree, If he was so mentally weak then he wouldn't Have took the shots from Clark, Williams, folley, And dejohn. Just watch the slugfest between Liston and Williams and tell me Liston was mentally weak...

  10. true, he was just frustrated against clay, simply because he did understand that he had no chance to beat a young and so fast ali.

tyson was very weak mentally. prime tyson was a kid really with the body of a great athlete. he did need cus like a father.

    McG,

I'm not saying we should not take into account the Liston-Clay and Ali-Liston
    fights.
    A loss is a loss.

But Geez,,,,,,,there is such a long line of 'slime' that trails those fights.

    Lewiston, Maine,,,,,,,,,,,,2500 or so people,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Jimmy Cannon,,,,,,,,'Liston fainted from the heat from the overhead lights'
