Joshua Clottey is suiting up, at the age of 41, still ambitiously contracted to make his natural and career modal weight of 154lbs after 3¼ years' sabbatical. His opponent in a 10-rounder at home in Accra is Mfaume Ahmad "One Punch" Said of Tanzania.

Said, who is young enough to be Clottey's progeny (had the elder spawned at seventeen), debuted in June of 2014, since which time Clottey has fought only twice. Despite his intimidating moniker, "One Punch" has only a 27 kayo ratio, with all of his stoppages - and indeed victories - coming against domestic rabble. In his two biggest steps up to whatsoever-recognizably-named international competition he suffered defeats via stoppage: to unbeaten Hungarian-Swissman light welterweight prospect Gábor Vető in 2016, followed by Armenian-Russian welterweight Vaginak Grishayevich Tamrazyan last October.

Picture this scenario: Clottey and Pacquiao, both with renewed momentum at the start of 2019 and coming off dominant victories, each in the latter half of it secure their dream rematches and chances at redeeming their respective UD losses from 2015 (against Gabe Rosado and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. respectively). They win those, and then ride that high into a rematch of their own "classic" encounter at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, on its decade anniversary, in March 2020, on PPV for a record-setting $150 (200 for Hi-Def). :deal: Somebody put me in charge of booking already, huh?

Grandmaster wins this. ultra teak tough. One punch hasn't got the chin to stand with Clottey. Clottey round 5 KO!! However I don't want to see Clottey stink out another arena in a big fight.

Hmm...can't speak to his loss against Tamrazyan, but the one against Vető at least is mitigated somewhat by this account from a local article in Switzerland, which suggests that Vető was either mildly hurt or in any event scared by Said's power early, and that he put up a decent challenge despite clearly losing, and ultimately had to withdraw only because of an injury:

"After a reluctant start Vető used his rights more often, so as to score his opponent in crisp short combinations. Even if it had not come to a fight break, the man managed by Geri Staudenmann Berner would have clearly distanced his opponent from Tanzania on the scores. Vető is still undefeated after his comeback in the spring and the now 30th fight as a professional.

The Wahlberner Vető had given his successful comeback as a professional in May after a four-year break. Now he climbed into the ring for the first time in front of his home crowd. And immediately made a concentrated impression: In the beginning, Vető scouted his opponent from Tanzania once in peace and immediately registered that this not only the blows nimbled swiftly, but could certainly stab from the bottom floor dangerously. Vető therefore remained consistently long and initially beat only individual jabs, usually to the head, occasionally to the body. Said was nimble and offered little attack surface. This changed from the third round: Vető now increased the pace and hit more and more often, the rights, if he spotted the chance. A simple straightforward combination, he completed with a precise hit to the temple Saids, which buckled slightly delayed. The Tanzanian came back without problems, but seemed impressed. However, Vető did not allow himself to be led into rash attacks. On the contrary, he continued to gently increase his hit rate without putting too much pressure on him. But also in the knowledge of being at the bottom of the scores. But so far came

It was not: At the beginning of the sixth round referee Beat Hausammann broke the fight right because Said had obviously injured his right upper arm and could not continue boxing.

It was not a brilliant victory. But Vető's obvious strategic discipline and tactical adaptability give rise to legitimate hopes: the unflustered way he used Coach Berki's strategy was an expression of great self-confidence. If he keeps them in fights against offensive punks who can put pressure on him, then Vető's path can still go a long way. To wish it would be the sympathetic and humble Bernese in any case.

This is actually on the undercard of a rematch between Sherrif Quaye and Michael Ansah, who contested the Ghanaian lightweight title as the co-feature to Emmanuel Tagoe vs. Paulus Moses last October. Quaye gutted out a pitched fast-paced battle and took a controversial split decision to retain his belt.

I really hope UTV airs this card as well, and we can find a viable international feed.

Btw, did anybody here catch Tagoe vs. Moses last year? I just did a search and there was no RBR made.

New interview w/ J-Shua. And just because; an excerpt:

Looking back, I feel like I made a mistake with the Pacquiao fight by not throwing punches. But sometimes, to tell you the truth, I feel like it’s OK. I had a lot of issues with my manager at the time, Vincent Scolpino. He took advantage of me. Our agreement said that he would help financially until I reached $70,000 a fight. He was taking 33 percent of my money. But once I started making over $70,000, he just disappeared. He wasn’t doing anything a manager should do. He wasn’t providing any financial help. Not even encouragement. Meanwhile, my promoter is the one getting me fights. Vinny wouldn’t even come see me in camp. He would show up fight week, collect his money after the fight and that was it.

I don’t think people understand how much that can weaken a fighter’s spirit. I didn’t see Vinny until the week of the Pacquiao fight. So, after the weigh-in, I went to his hotel room. I told him how unhappy I was. I said, drop the 33 percent down to 27 percent. He refused. When I fought Pacquiao, I decided I was just going to defend myself. I wasn’t going to put my life on the line for people who did nothing, but take from me. It was all about business for Vinny. And I’m going in there taking punches so that he can take a big portion even though you don’t speak to me.

You gotta give Clottey a good shot here. I am not familiar with his opponent, but based on the description he sounds like a regional fighter with a heavily padded record, i.e. someone ripe for being exposed by a faded world class operator like Clottey.

To everybody that let themselves feel hoodwinked into believing for a second this was about Dmitry Pirog:

(which is unintentionally hilarious; I didn't even think of that possible consequence when making the thread)
