From the “one fight” from 1948-1950 joe fought another 19 times in 1948 (including bouts against Arturo Godoy, Billy Conn and Jimmy Bivins that were certainly competitive), 36 times in 1949 ( including bouts with Curtis Shepherd, Elmer Ray, olimio Agramante, bill Gilliam, Nino Valdes, Rex Layne, Tommy Flynn, Johnny Shkor and Roscoe Tolles) and 24 times in 1950 (including bouts with Pat Valentino, Clarence Henry, Nino Valdes, Henry Hall) so that count becomes 1+79 fights for the period dosnt it? You can dismiss them as mere exhibitions but guys were knocked out by Joe Louis here. Some were 10 rounders with News paper decisions. Some Real fights, often with no head guards but no official decision.

 

Yes this exhibition tour was more legit than much of George Foremans, pre Aldison Rodriguez,early comeback.

 

In a 1989 article Ferdie Pacheco said this of the Foreman comeback-

“ I thought Marciano and foreman were the only guys who got out on time. But to come back now? Quite simply, this is pathetic, it shouldn’t be allowed. He’s overage, inept. This whole thing is a fraudulent second career to build a Money fight with Tyson”

Any era in which Gardner,Sys,Williams are ranked and Savold is number 2 isn't just," not very good" its pretty bad!

 

Charles Martin and Manny Charr are champion material these days. Surely anything could happen.

 

You can take any decade and you will find unremarkable guys within the top ten. Even the best ones.

Domingo d’elia, Jose Roman, José Urtain Johnny Boudreaux, ,Jack Bodel, Lorenzo Zannon all ranked during the fabulous 1970s.

chuck Wepner, Duane Bobbick and Jose Luis Garcia made it several years running too.

Thats not to say they were bad fighters. But it does say there would have been a place for men regarded as less remarkable contenders from other eras.

 

Some of them were more real than a great many fights contenders pad their record with. Some of them clearly were not exhibitions at all.

 

Just watched it again. Louis looked near shot, he couldnt pull the trigger and his reflexes were slow he had serious trouble avoiding the wide overhand right.
Marciano himself looks poor and comical with the tiny arms. Gotta respect the punching power and determination
