Louis was no where near his greatest best but still good.
Remember, A fighter looks only as good as the other guy let’s him. Rocky made bad fighters look good and good fighters look bad he was so awkward and raw. What you need to watch is Louis against Brion.

Well, In viewing all the posts I think Louis own statements on whether he was shot or not should count for as much, he said he could see the openings but the punches just wouldn't go. He reminded me more of the Liston of the Martin bout then the Ali vs Patterson 2 version of Ali as Muhammad could still pull the trigger in that bout. Joe could still put out the jab like Sonny and Rocky said it felt like a sledge hammer, but there wasn't a right hand any more.

 

What a fool he would have felt like.

Good comparisson to the 1976-77 Ali.

 

A lot of this discussion comes down to what we define as "shot", and there are really no fixed definition as I know of.

My definition is very similar to Reznick's. Examples of shot fighters in my book would be Charles after Marciano II, Ali after his first retirement in 1979 and Tyson after Lewis. Both Ali and Tyson had been past their primes for years at these respective points, but I wouldn't call them shot until then.

But I can't say that my definition is cannon in any way. But what we can say of Rocky's win is that he emphatically defeated a top contender, with only Charles and Walcott clearly better among the other HWs. We shouldn't confuse it with a win over a fighter of ATG quality but neither should we dismiss it as worthless.

 

There was a lot of them. All with egg on their faces when George won the title. And that was because it didn’t seem logical that he could climb the ranks. But then of course George didn’t have to.

So true. I think that was a mistake for Joe Louis to fight actual ranking contenders when he should have just done what George did. Louis should have been fighting irrelevant guys like ken lukasta and Everet Martin. Guys like Sid Peaks and Willie Bean, candy mcdaniels that joe met only in exhibitions would have made him look better than George did slapping around those little guys.

To match Foreman completely, Louis would then need for jersey Joe Walcott to duck Marciano and to have “a funny turn” in the ring against a much lesser fighter that Joe Louis could beat.

 

God you've got it bad for Foreman Chok. You've spent hours in the past attackign why Foreman got a title shot against Frazier and now you attack him getting a title shot in his second incarnation, not to mention succeeding.

How venomous is it toward Foreman to say that joe Louis would have benefited just as much from the exact same unique circumstances that allowed Foreman to become champion again?
