Before Ali fought Liston he fought nobody and after he beat Liston the only decent fighter he fought was Chuvalo who both Foreman and Frazier destroyed. In his comeback even though he was 28 people claim he was past his prime. So what prime did he have? Against Doug Jones a 190 pound fighter with a career record 30-10 was that his prime? Getting beat around the ring and most people ring side think he lost http://boxrec.com/media/index.php?title=Fight:22876 Was his prime against Sonny Banks who floored him with one punch? That fight also shows how easy Ali was to be hit. He kept his hands down extremely low and if Banks didn't have a poor chin he probably could of hurt Ali again. You could watch his fights with Cooper or Chuvalo and see how easy Ali was to be hit when you didn't try to load up with one punch. That is why Cooper a 190 pound fighter was able to hurt him badly with one punch. When he came out his exile and lost to Norton 3 times people make excuses. Ali was old even though he and Norton were virtually the same age. If you believe Ali was slowing down then wouldn't Norton slow down as well? Unless Norton was immortal. Frazier beat Ali because he didn't try to load up with one punch and Ali couldn't handle the pressure. That is why guys like Tyson would of beat Ali as well. Tyson wasn't as tough but he was stronger, hit harder, had faster hand and power in both hands. The Foreman win was luck as I explain before and Ali knew this and avoided Foreman like the plague. Ali had no probably give anybody else a rematch. If he knew he was a great boxer and could always beat Foreman why not fight him again and make a another huge pay day? The way you people hero worship some fighters. Lewis gets knocked out so he has a glass chin. Joe Louis got knocked out and knocked down by far lesser fighters and you people have nothing to say. Tommy Morrison gets knocked 3 times and he has a glass chin. Wladimir Klitschko gets knocked out 3 times and knocked down and hurt various others times and it is okay. Foreman got tired in 1 fight and he has horrible stamina. Wlad gets tired all the time and who cares. Some of you people know what you are talking about. But most people here are clueless. I assume you like boxing because you love to look at guys with out their shirts on. You don't know a damn thing about the sport and you love to keep repeating something you hear. Never smart enough to go check out something on your own and come up with your own opinion.
I agree with the general point that "prime Ali" is a bit of a myth. There's some truth to it. Ali's best performances are very possibly in the 1970s, although maybe he was more inconsistent in his conditioning in these years so he had some very bad performances in the 1970s too. His best opposition to test him was in the 1970s.
Tommy Morrison was barely even a contender in his own era. His glass chin is almost irrelevant. He was just a hype job. He had heart but wasn't a top fighter. I believe Foreman could have crushed him but showed pity on the poor kid.
Well that isn't saying much is it? Floyd Patterson was a natural light heavyweight Ernie wasn't anything special to begin with.
Weird because I didn't ask you was Morrison a contender. I said people who don't know boxing say he has a glass chin and then defend other people who were knocked out more times by lesser fighters.
Well at least you agree slightly with what I typed. But even in the 70s he struggled against every top guy. He didn't dominate any Frazier, Norton, Foreman or Lyle. Not one time in his career did he fight a world class fighter in their primes and just dominate.
That's true but that's to be expected. When fighters dominate others in easy fights it usually means the opposition isn't much.
But they don't really. They probably defend fighters who BEAT better fighters than Morrison did. Genuine contenders and champions. You mentioned Tommy Morrison in the same paragraph as Louis, Lewis and Klitschko. Morrison doesn't really belong.
The rematch with Norton was a clear victory. Other than that I guess you could argue that he stopped Liston, Frazier and Foreman. Why would beating 4 top 15 HW mean he's any good though? like you said he struggled with Doug Jones which tells us much more than the above.
Ali struggled with Doug Jones. Joe Louis struggled with Arturo Godoy. Mike Tyson struggled with James Tillis. George Foreman struggled with Jerry Judge. They were all **** fighters let's be honest.....
good post herc, U forgot to mention some of his wins were just gifts too! If u factor those in, he's even worse. But even though he did struggle with some guys, he did win many of those fights. So, I do give him a lot of credit. He's the biggest hype job there ever was though. Guy had no class, an absolute ahole, but people loved him. I thought he was so good when I was young, now I look back at his early fights with him doing the gay dancing and think WTF was I thinking. But he did have a lot of skill. Not one of my favorites though
