The Main Event: Prime Joe Calzaghe vs Chris Byrd.. for the IBF Championship!

chris byrd would need a 40lb weight advantage to beat joe calzaghe. don't get me wrong byrd was a good solid fighter, but joe, he was one of the greats.

 

this is one of the stupidest goddamn threads ever. how do you think joe would look at 200 lbs? he'd have a beer gut. byrd would completely beat the **** out of the joe. the thought of calzaghe at heavyweight is completely comical. plus joe stayed away from southpaws. if you're looking for calzaghe fantasy matchups, try joe vs sven ottke. this is more fitting to his level.

 

great what?? joe was a good fighter but when it came to stepping up in class, he was a coward.

 

Joe can weight anything he likes in a HW match-up even without there needing to be a 'catch-weight'. All that would accomplish would be to impose a limit on what Byrd could weigh. If you are imposing a 200lb limit, then it ceases to be a heavyweight contest. Then you are talking about Calzaghe vs. Byrd at cruiser. (in which case, again, either party can weight 199.99lbs or they can weigh 138lbs...whatever they like, under the limit)

...and now, a brief lesson on somatotypes...

Calzaghe says it in his auto-biography. I don't believe Calzaghe to be the type to make something like that up either. I strongly believe it is true as the only people who I have seen saying it isn't are people on here without sources who don't like Calzaghe.

Obviously as pros a heavyweight Byrd wins by stoppage.

 

Come on, there is no evidence that Calzaghe could even put on the muscle to be succesful at cruiser, let alone HW. He wasn't a very big guy at SMW to begin with. Jones jr. did it, granted, but it's a Unique achievement in modern times + he as heavily into PED's. Do a Calzaghe vs Haye at cruiser before you even start talking about Byrd.

 

Yes Byrd fought 3 fights at LHW. His first 2, and his second to last fight in which he looked like smoky the crackhead from the PJs.:-(

 

I don't see anything about Joe's style that makes me believe he could compete with top heavies...

He has speed, that's it, his power would be non-existent, when you are that much smaller you need to have the power to keep the bigger man honest.. And Chris Byrd was one hell of a boxer as well, and Joe wasn't that elusive all the time, which I am sure he would be very cautious at HW.

Also, I would like to see how Joe would have looked against an elite southpaw at his own weight before I can say he beats an elite southpaw at HW.. But Joe never fought a top southpaw in his entire professional career.

I think it is possible Byrd stops him.

Also, I don't think Joe beats Ruiz either.

It seems to me that people base Calzaghe's HW success on the fact that Roy could do it..

We have to remember, that Roy had Mackie Shilstone, who strategically packed muscle and reduced fat % the exact way he did for Spinks to get up there... Roy kept his speed and had even more power... I am not sure Calzaghe had the frame for that or the punching power, and I honestly don't believe just fattening up would be a very good plan...

Also, Roy was one the best I have ever seen that can punch hard while backing up.. And that played a big part of the Ruiz fight.
