Going by his report, if Lowry didnt do anything after round 4, if he ran away and went into his shell, There is no way Lowry won 6 rounds. Because going by THAT report, Rocky took rounds 5-ten.
Marciano was sick for the first fight and came in at 180 lbs for the 1st fight but most of the accounts I heard were the body shots got to TED and he seemed to lose energy and look to survive the last 6 rds. and Marciano outpunched him 3 to 1 Marciano had 20 fights going into the fight, Lowry had 115 fights, Lowry was a crafty survivor and a solid vet, he went the distance with Archie Moore, Lee Oma, Billy Fox, Omelio Argramente,Lee Savold,Phil Muscato..he was only stopped 3 times in his career of 144 bouts Rusty Payne,Lee Q Murry and Lowrys last KO defeat was vs Harry "Kid Matthews in the fight right after Matthews was KO'd in 2 by Marciano. Lowry was a skillfull survivor and the 1st fight with Marciano was Rocky's worst fight but Ted still lost 6 rds of that fight. Most felt Lowry was hurt by the body shots. Still he deserves acclaim for being a tough opponent. Lowry was known for losing close decisions vs some experienced fighters.
Going by that report, the reporter said Lowry won 6 rounds to 4 for Marciano. The report also says that Lowry stunned Rocky in the final round. I read an interview with Ted Lowry where he said he intentionally slowed down because he wanted the fight to go to a decision so he could get a rematch for bigger pay. I can't seem to find this interview anywhere at the moment. It was controversial decision based on all I've read which doesn't just include this newspaper article. Not that one should judge Marciano's abilities based on one early fight of his but it shows that unbeaten records mean very little, Rocky could have very well lost this fight on the scorecards. He would still be a great fighter though. Here's something about it: http://bwundercard.blogspot.com/2007/06/everybody-knows-that-rocky-marciano.html
The most important fact to me was that Marciano was badly hurt multiple times which clearly shows he was not the idestructable force many here claim.
But Rocky was green in that fight, We cant judge Rocky's chin in there. And come out with he had a glass chin. We do have footage of once Rocky mature, we saw how great it was. Rocky also had sloppy footwork in his early years. Its sort of like judging Ali's chin base on what happen in the Banks fight. And now after all this time, most people will say Ali was indestructable. No man is indestructable, but, any one can be ko, but I still think Rocky had a top chin imo. Never heard of Ted carrying the Rock, some reports as said before, mention it was the body shots, than again we cant be too sure with out FULL footage of the fight. Also rember it was going by the round system, and not the point system, the reporter for this fight did say Ted did hardly nothing after round 4, you cant score rounds for a guy running and hardly punching with Rocky thowing shots, landed or nor not. effort did play a part in the scoring after all.
True, he was not an indestructible force. No one ever was. But Cassius Clay was dropped heavy by both Sonny Banks and Henry Cooper, at a similar stage of development to an early Marciano. Great A provided an interesting report, and I consider it a very dodgy decision purely on what I've read. And Lowry held back. But even so it doesn't prove he could have knocked Marciano out. Marciano could certainly be hurt, that's the truth. And his 49-0 record contains a couple of suspect decisions in his favour. Marciano was often appreciated in his own time as champion, not necessarily as a great champ or great fighter, but for the improvement and progress he'd made in his career to get that far. Around 1949 - '50, it's true, few who were following him and watching him from ringside were really convinced he had the makings of a champion, and more than a few considered him a lucky clubfighter.
i also read and found very funny that lowry said the marciano wasn't the hardest puncher he faced, but archie moore was...he mentioned that archie came extremely close to breaking his jaw to the point it was so swollen that he had to drink his meals through a straw, even on a date with his then future wife
Marciano was 180 lbs, sick and in his 20th pro fight but most account say Marciano dominated the 2nd half of the fight but had a few rough patches early, still Marciano did not hit the deck and most people felt it was he that slowed down Lowry with the body shots and most people felt Marciano won. Like Unforgiven stated Ali was dropped by Banks and Cooper, Frazier was dropped by Bruce and Bonavena, Dempsey had his early trouble, Johnson Ko'd by Choynski. Lewis could not KO the often KO'd Levi Billups. I guess its a good thing when posters have to dig so hard to find a flaw, try as they might.
Rocky pawing. I'm believing my knowledge of his flu is becoming more and more apparent. Still need to verify that. Not denial, that's why I asked for a report. Thanks Great A for finding the write up. Also, I think it speaks volumes of Rocky's improvement as a fighter. He absorbed things like a sponge once he had good ol' Charlie with him. Also, I don't expect a sick flue-ridden, weak, and green Marciano to be in any way, shape, or form be an 'indestructible force' as some suggest people claim him to be. Lots of fighters get hurt and dropped early on. Remember Frazier was dropped and down for an 8 count only in his second fight to a complete bum. The fact a weak, sick, and poorly performing Rocky got stunned against a crafty veteran shouldn't suggest or expose any kind of weakness. Rocky improved greatly by 51 from then.
I heard he had the flu during the Savold fight which was not one of his best performances but I haven't heard of him being ill during the Lowry fight.
Perhaps you meant this? http://news.google.com/newspapers?n...UYLAAAAIBAJ&sjid=IE8DAAAAIBAJ&pg=2814,2596915 It says Roland LaStarza was ill when he outpointed Ted Lowry.
No, not LaStarza. It wasn't the Savold fight. Rocky looked sloppy but was 186 pounds and KOed Savold. I'm 95% sure it was a decision fight and remember Nicky Sylvester attesting to Rocky having the flu and being weak for the Lowry fight. I have to verify this because I'm not certain. I got this from the Rocky A Life Story DVD.
