I was there the night that Barrera made his US debut, just past his 18th birthday and, memory don't fail me now, 21-0 with 15. He was very good that night and I followed his career very closely for many years.
Before his fight on the inaugural show at the Pond in Anaheim, I saw him workout and spar a couple times. He sparred with his brother on those occasions and they went hard. Barrera was known for being stone face in the ring but, when watching his brother from ringside, he was as dramatic as a silent movie diva.
The first loss to Junior Jones happened because Barrera forgot who he was in the ring. Barrera was always a thoughtful, calculating fighter that could bring it. He was like Hagler in that regard. He got a little reckless for a while and paid for it.

If you want to understand Barrera, there are 2 fights that I think were very important in shaping his career and the fighter that he became. Watch his fight with Eddie Cook and his fight with Israel Perez.

:bump since there's a rare sighting of @Addie online! (and because next week is the Pac vs. MAB 1 twenty year anniversary)

    Hello IB.

I hope you've been keeping well.

Pacquiao-MAB I is quite literally the fight that got me into Boxing. 20 years ago? I feel impossibly old.

You too, mate! Glad to see you poke your head round.

Same but for me it was the humbling of Naz a few years earlier. I was 18 and had seen the odd Tyson or Hagler match with my dad in my youth, later been peripherally aware of the likes of RJJ from just recess-yard scuttlebutt, and had actually seen a good few Naz fights on HBO just flipping channels, and was left in total awe of what transpired. Instantaneous transformation, casual to lifer. :deal:

I guess we're both old nowadays.

Fantastic work in this thread, IB. Excellent write ups on some of MAB's most impressive displays.

Who else from back in the day still posts here?

@Rumsfeld and @McGrain (in Classic) and @kirk, all mods. @Drew101, @WhataRock, @cuchulain, maybe a handful other holdouts from the old days that still post regularly.

Is this the same Addie who had a thing for Wynona Ryder about 14 or 15 years ago ?

Supplementary question....Ross the Boss once mentioned that the old lounge was still stored on a server somewhere, at least the portion from the crash of June , 2007 till the Demis of the lounge in 2013. Do you know if the is true ?

MAB was terrific. His humbling of Hamed is still one of my favorite fights ever. He made it look so easy and exposed Hamed's lack of boxing IQ for all the world to see.

I have heard that rumor for a long time but never straight from the horse's mouth. The horse and I don't really talk (guess I'm not Doolittle and he ain't Mister Ed :sisi1)

Was wondering about it recently myself.

And yeah, Addie/selfkill definitely has/had a Winona thing. Which, same.

What's a late reply (by a few years) between chums? :D

You've given PNH the 2nd, 5th, 10th & 12th. You're pretty much in line there with the general fan consensus, from scorecard aggregator EOTR:

    https://eyeonthering.com/boxing/playing-fire-naseem-hamed-vs-marco-antonio-barrera

Only major difference is that most gave Barrera round two (while a slight majority gave the next round to Hamed, interesting that you flipped those) and virtually everyone scores the finale 9-9 - as in, MAB's round but docked a point. I can't recall seeing anybody else, including all three judges and Lederman, mark it a 10-8 for Naz.
